Why is the Missouri Department of Revenue involved in your traffic or DWI case?

The court handles the charge. The Department maintains the driver record and administers points, suspensions, revocations, administrative alcohol actions, and reinstatement.

Resolving one side may not finish the other.

Can you handle a Missouri traffic ticket without a lawyer?

Yes—some truly minor matters can reasonably be handled without counsel.

But check the points, your existing record, insurance, employment, CDL, appearance requirements, and license status before paying or pleading.

If you hire a Missouri traffic lawyer, do you still have to appear in court?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

The charge, court, judge, stage of the case, and your lawyer’s instructions control. Hiring counsel does not automatically excuse every appearance.

Never miss court unless your attorney clearly confirms that you are excused.

What is a Missouri lieu-of-bail hold?

The Department of Revenue says it is not itself a license suspension. It is a hold placed on the driver record after certain failures to appear or pay, preventing issuance of a new or duplicate license.

The underlying court case may still involve a separate warrant, suspension, or compliance problem.

Suspended and revoked do not mean exactly the same thing in Missouri.

A suspension temporarily withdraws driving privileges. A revocation terminates them for a stated period and generally requires applying for a new license after eligibility.

But neither automatically becomes valid just because time passed.

🚨 ST. LOUIS AREA DWI ENFORCEMENT INCREASES TONIGHT

If you’re heading out tonight, be aware that law enforcement agencies across the St. Louis region are participating in Saturation Saturday, a coordinated effort focused on impaired-driving enforcement.

More than 30 Eastern Missouri law enforcement agencies are expected to participate, with additional agencies participating statewide.

What does that mean for drivers? 👇🏾

🚔 Increased DWI enforcement
🚔 Additional officers looking for signs of impaired driving
🚔 Saturation patrols and other enforcement efforts
🚔 Greater likelihood of traffic stops leading to DWI investigations

A DWI investigation can involve much more than the criminal charge itself. Depending on what happens during the stop, drivers may also face driver’s license consequences, breath or blood testing issues, refusal allegations, field sobriety testing, and separate administrative deadlines.

Most importantly: plan your ride before you start drinking. Uber, Lyft, a designated driver, or staying where you are is a whole lot cheaper than dealing with a DWI.

If you do find yourself arrested or cited, remember that an arrest is not a conviction, and you have the right to speak with an attorney about your options.

Driving while suspended or revoked in Missouri is not “just another ticket.”

The new case can carry criminal penalties and driver’s-license points, while the original reason for the suspension or revocation still has to be fixed separately.

Do you need SR-22 insurance to reinstate a Missouri driver’s license?

The honest answer: not everyone does.

An SR-22 is a filing from an insurance company showing liability coverage. Whether Missouri requires it—and whether it must remain for two or three years—depends on the exact action on your driver record.
