The LCA is an organization of elite litigation attorneys drawn from across the United States. The LCA website summarizes its membership as follows:

The Litigation Counsel of America is an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society established to reflect the new face of the American bar. Membership is limited to 3,500 Fellows, representing less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. Congratulations to Jeff Van Volkenburg for being elected to the FDCC Foundation Board of Directors. The mission of the FDCC Foundation is mission to promote civil justice, encourage and foster continuing education and sponsor projects, programs and other endeavors that allow FDCC members to enhance the quality of their legal services. The Foundation supports FDCC members by providing seed money for projects of the Federation knowing that those projects will ultimately enhance the educational well-being of not only FDCC members but the defense bar at large.

Congratulations to V&V member, Deb Varner, who recently concluded her term as President of the American College of Coverage Counsel (ACCC). The ACCC is the preeminent association of U.S., Canadian, and Bermudan lawyers who represent the interests of insurers and policyholders, with a mission is to advance the creative, ethical, and efficient adjudication of insurance coverage and extracontractual disputes; to enhance the civility and quality of the practice of insurance law; to provide peer-reviewed scholarship; and to improve of the relationship between and among the members of the bar.

The ACCC engages in a rigorous vetting process prior to inviting a lawyer to become a fellow. The ACCC fellows include many of the most prominent members of the insurance law bar. Deb, as Immediate Past-President, will now continue in her leadership role in the organization and serve as the chairperson of the Board of Regents for the ACCC.

At the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia's ("DTCWV") Annual Meeting, held last week at Stonewall Resort, V&V attorney Jeff Van Volkenburg was the recipient of the President's Special Recognition Award, which is awarded at the sole discretion of the President of the organization and honors contributions to the organization over the past year.

Also at the Annual Meeting, Jeff was elected by the DTCWV membership to begin his role as a member of the DTCWV's Executive Committee, taking on the position of Secretary of the DTCWV. Jeff has been a member of the DTCWV Board of Governors since 2015 and previously served as the Young Lawyer Chair for the organization.

It was further announced at the Annual Meeting that V&V attorney Brandon Kroll has been chosen to begin his role as continuing legal education (CLE) coordinator for the DTCWV Young Lawyer Section, which involves coordinating the various Young Lawyer CLE programs throughout the upcoming year. This will be Brandon's third year as a member of the DTCWV and as an attorney at V&V, following his graduation from law school at Wake Forest University and a clerkship with Judge Aloi, Magistrate Court Judge for the Federal District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.

The DTCWV is an organization consisting of approximately 500 attorneys, all licensed to practice law in West Virginia who focus on the defense of individuals and corporations involved in civil litigation in West Virginia courts. The organization's mission statement provides: "To bring together attorneys who defend individuals and corporations in civil litigation for the purposes of elevating the standards of West Virginia trial practice; supporting and advocating for the improvement of the adversary system of jurisprudence; and increasing the quality of services rendered by the legal profession to the citizens of West Virginia." The DTCWV was founded in 1982.

V&V is proud to have its attorneys take an active role in the DTCWV and we look forward to continuing to take an active role with the DTCWV and the defense bar.

The ACCC was established in 2012 and is the preeminent association of U.S., Canadian, and Bermudan lawyers who represent the interests of insurers and policyholders. The ACCC’s mission is to advance the creative, ethical and efficient resolution of insurance coverage and extracontractual disputes; to enhance the civility and quality of the practice of insurance law; to provide peer-reviewed scholarship; and to improve the relationships among the members of our profession.

The ACCC engages in a rigorous vetting process prior to inviting a lawyer to become a fellow. The Fellows of the ACCC include many of the most prominent members of the insurance law bar.

She is member of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (
FDCC), Litigation Counsel of America (LCA) and Claims & Litigation Management Alliance (CLM). Varner is licensed to practice in West Virginia and Pennsylvania and handles complex insurance cases throughout the country. She has an active trial practice and has tried cases throughout West Virginia. Varner routinely has argued numerous cases at the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, as well as the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals. She has spoken on insurance coverage issues throughout the country.

Varner obtained her Bachelors Degree in Accounting from William Paterson University and her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law. She is a 1986 graduate of Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, NJ. Varner is married to preeminent trial lawyer, Jim Varner and is the proud mother of two step-children. She lives on a farm with her husband and four dogs. When not working, Deb enjoys cooking, traveling and being Gigi to her grandchild.

Since January 15, 2019, we have strived to provide excellent, timely service to our clients in West Virginia. Since our first days operating out of our initial Peck Street office in Clarksburg, we have moved into our new office on Washington Avenue, on the same block as the Harrison County Courthouse. We have also expanded our reach by offering service to clients in other states. Since the day we opened our doors, we remain ready to handle our clients most difficult cases while assuring that we are always looking out for the best interests of those we serve.
