That diagonal seam running from Cleveland down toward Cincinnati is the most important line in Ohio, and it explains almost everything about the state.
West of it is the Central Lowland, the Till Plains. Flat, deep-soiled, laid down when the glaciers came through and left hundreds of feet of ground-up rock and clay behind. That is why western Ohio is a grid of corn and soybeans and small towns spaced evenly apart. There is nothing to route around.
East of it is the Appalachian Plateau, which the ice never reached. Steep ridges, narrow hollows, sandstone cliffs, roads that follow creeks because there was no other option. That is coal country, iron furnace country, Hocking Hills, Wayne National Forest and the Ohio River towns.
Two completely different states sharing one border.
The colors add the other dimension, which is age. The rock gets older as you move west. Cincinnati sits on Ordovician, roughly 450 million years old, which is why that region is famous among fossil hunters. Southwest Ohio produces brachiopods, trilobites and crinoids by the bucket, and geology students come from everywhere to collect there.
Move east and the layers get progressively younger. Silurian, then Devonian through the middle, then Mississippian and Pennsylvanian in the southeast.
The Pennsylvanian layer is the one that mattered economically. That is where the coal is. Every mining town, every strip mine, every abandoned tipple in southeastern Ohio sits on that band, and the whole industrial history of Youngstown, Steubenville and the Hanging Rock furnaces traces back to it.
The Toledo corner is different again. The Eastern Lake section is old lakebed, which is what the Great Black Swamp formed on.
Salt under Lake Erie. Oil and gas in the shale. Limestone quarries in the west.
Everything Ohio built came out of what is under it.
