A Short Discussion About DIY Divorce in Ohio
Ohio, as in all states, allows you to represent yourself through any divorce process (or any other legal proceeding for that matter). But, is this really a good idea?
Non-attorney document prep sites offering divorce packages are strictly fill-in-the-blanks. There are no legal discussions taking place on any of the issues nor is there any guidance as to equitable divisions and options on how that might take place. HOW that paperwork is prepared will control many things far into the future and there are pitfalls awaiting the unwary. And if there are minor children involved the issues expand.
In a perfect world, where money is no object, everyone would have an attorney involved, even in the simplest of circumstances. But, in the real world cost is a primary factor for the majority of people. Even divorce consultations with attorneys is not always free. Attorneys have office expenses and high overhead costs which prohibit them from spending time with people without producing revenue. That is understandable.
Because of this, there is a large group of people who separate and don’t get divorced for years because they simply can’t afford the costs. Even if they qualify for legal aid services, they often are denied or put on extremely long waiting lists. But, there are many good reasons why remaining married after separating might not be a good idea.
What, then, is the best course of action? If your situation is one where both parties can agree on everything, or your spouse is not going to contest anything, then you have a simple divorce that can be put through the courts quickly. The cost of this can be minimal if you get the right advice and have a clear road map to follow.
If you are in need of some good legal advice on your situation, please feel free to call me and I will be happy to discuss your situation with you at no charge. Getting the right information often makes all the difference and removes a lot of confusion as to what it is you really need to do, and how you can get through the process representing yourself appropriately.
