A beautiful Fall day to head to the historic and well-maintained Highland County Courthouse in Hillsboro. The plaque on the wall (with the name of a direct ancestor, Reason Moberley, who fought in the War for Independence and is buried here) helps me (Tom) remember that my family has been rooted in this area for over 200 years and that this is a region worth loving. (Also helps that Kidd & Urling enjoyed a good result while I was there; a client is released early from prison.)

In 2009, I (Tom) had the opportunity to serve as co-counsel on a case with an ADF attorney here in Federal Court in Cincinnati. Eventually, we were able to obtain a very good result for our clients. I wish I could say I did the heavy lifting, but that was done by the ADF attorney, Mike Johnson. Today, that same Mike Johnson was selected to be the Speaker of the House. He was an intelligent, hard-working man who wanted to serve His Lord faithfully in his work. From all accounts, that is what he continues to desire. May the Lord bless and protect him and may the prayers of God's people ascend to support him.

Congratulations to Gabriel Rench and the Thomas More Society on the recent decision denying summary judgment - a definite win for the First Amendment. Seldom have I seen a judge be so direct in recommending that a government settle and not prolong a case.

Great language from the decision:
"The Court typically prefers to let the parties dictate the path of their own litigation, but this is one of the most novel set of circumstances the Court has ever encountered. Given that
Plaintiffs were wrongfully arrested, the City indisputably erred in interpreting its own Code, the City consequently misadvised its officers as to the Code’s application, and Plaintiffs are so far reasonable in their damages requests, this case should not need to see the inside of a courtroom."

I (Tom) had an old friend from high school reach out to me today. He was understandably worried. He had received a call saying his son was in jail and he called me asking for help figuring out what to do next. I did what I usually do - check the various public sites that I am aware of to check on his incarceration status, bond amount, next hearing. I couldn't find anything. Additionally, what my friend told me did not add up - little things like the name of the charge, the title of the court, etc. I asked my friend if he had actually been contacted by his son. He said he had not. I told him that I thought this was a scam, and to call his son to see whether he really was in jail. Ten minutes later, he called me back saying his son was fine. He was a bit embarrassed, but he shouldn't be. This is a common scam aimed at getting money quickly from people who are confused and afraid. Be careful. Always get accurate information from the source before giving anyone financial information.
