The purpose of SWEL is to provide a pipeline leading to the legal profession for African American and other racially diverse high school and college students with an interest in law. SWEL is designed to advance academic, personal, and professional growth through real-world legal experience and academic preparation, counseling and networking opportunities with legal professionals and law students.
The emphasis of the program is academic classes and a paid experience at a law firm, corporate legal department, with a municipal, county or federal judge, or nonprofit legal organization during the summer in the effort to provide both legal exposure and experience that will guide students to consider a career in law, and increase diversity in the pipeline leading to the legal profession. Through legal internships and weekly academic classes, students are prepared and supported in their goal to secure admission to law school, and gain first-hand experience about career options within the legal profession.
