The purpose of SWEL is to provide a pipeline leading to the legal profession for African American and other racially diverse high school and college students with an interest in law. SWEL is designed to advance academic, personal, and professional growth through real-world legal experience and academic preparation, counseling and networking opportunities with legal professionals and law students.

The emphasis of the program is academic classes and a paid experience at a law firm, corporate legal department, with a municipal, county or federal judge, or nonprofit legal organization during the summer in the effort to provide both legal exposure and experience that will guide students to consider a career in law, and increase diversity in the pipeline leading to the legal profession. Through legal internships and weekly academic classes, students are prepared and supported in their goal to secure admission to law school, and gain first-hand experience about career options within the legal profession.

The Summer Work Experience in Law Program (SWEL) would like to extend a huge thank you to the Dinsmore law firm (Cincinnati) for hosting our incredible session on the civil and criminal justice systems. Dinsmore attorneys Marty Dunn and Reginald Staples provided the scholars with insight on their careers and work with the firm. And attorneys Calvin Tregre and Carl Lewis drilled knowledge into the scholars about the two justice systems and the important legal work they do for the community within those systems (Tregre - civil; Lewis - criminal/civil).

Thank you all for assisting us in building social engineers!

We are producing social engineers!

Huge thank you goes out to retired attorney, Renee Filiatraut, and her son, Max Williams, who is also an attorney practicing in Cincinnati! Renee practiced law in Cincinnati since 1989 and recently retired. Max began practicing in 2019, after graduating from The Ohio State University School of Law.

The pair took the time to meet with the SWEL Scholars and provide guidance to the scholars on their road to law school and give their perspectives on how to begin and maintain successful legal careers.

While the discussion was considered intimate in its own manner, notice that even a deer came by to listen and learn.

The Summer Work Experience in Law Program (SWEL) would like to extend a huge thank you to the law firm Frost Brown Todd (Cincinnati) for hosting our first 2021 session. The scholars were thrilled to connect with one another and hear from members of the firm about the legal profession and professionalism overall. SWEL Scholars remain steadfast in their goals to become great attorneys, more specifically “social engineers.” Thank you Frost Brown Todd, Adam Hall (Managing Partner), Kimberly Amrine, Richard Moore, Eric Cook, and others for assisting us in our endeavors!
