From patented training and performance technologies to trademarks, licensing, and media rights, intellectual property protects the ideas and assets that power the sports industry.

As an IP law firm, 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘀 is stoked to support the innovators building the technologies, systems, and brands that provide entertainment, recreation, and fun.

At Wood Herron & Evans, 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 is one we truly celebrate.

Established by UNESCO, it highlights something central to our work: 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Because copyright does more than protect authors—it fuels innovation, supports culture, and ensures creators receive the value of what they create.

It’s Earth Day.

A reminder that solving global environmental challenges takes more than good ideas—it takes innovation that can scale.

At 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘀, we know earth-friendly technologies only make an impact when they move beyond the lab. Intellectual property helps turn ideas into scalable solutions—supporting market entry, growth, and real-world adoption.

Through patent protection and commercialization strategies—and trademarks that build trust and guard against misleading “green” claims—we’re proud to partner with innovators advancing renewable energy, advanced materials, and cleaner manufacturing.

Because meaningful change depends on protecting and deploying innovation.

DIY is often where innovation begins.

𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗜𝗬 𝗗𝗮𝘆—a newer celebration of makers, tinkerers, and problem-solvers who take initiative and pride in doing it themselves.
Here’s the pivot: it’s not just about making or fixing something—it’s recognizing when it’s worth protecting.

Because today’s side project could become tomorrow’s competitive advantage. What begins as a project can quickly become intellectual property.

It’s also a compelling example of how intellectual property shows up in unexpected places. From its brand and storytelling to its scientific work, the Zoo demonstrates how organizations can build value well beyond patents.

Few organizations illustrate the power of content and identity quite like the Zoo—where even its most recognizable animals become part of a broader brand narrative.

The takeaway is simple: innovation isn’t confined to a lab—and neither is IP. It is based in:
• Brand • Content • Research • Know-how

We’re proud to support those advancing both innovation and impact.

It’s Opening Day ⚾—and from an IP standpoint, baseball is as much about innovation and brand protection as it is about the game itself.

From patented equipment and performance technology to iconic team trademarks, broadcast rights, and licensed merchandise, 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 is built on a deep and carefully managed portfolio of intellectual property.

As an IP law firm, 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘀 appreciates how thoughtful IP strategy helps preserve what makes the game timeless.

𝗜𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗺: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀

Wood Herron & Evans has lost a beloved partner, colleague, mentor, and friend. Greg Ahrens was—and will always remain—a stalwart of our firm.

Over the past weeks, we have mourned his passing while also celebrating the privilege of having known him. As a firm, we recently gathered to share memories and reflect on the extraordinary impact Greg had on all of us. We offer a few of those reflections here.

Greg was, quite simply, someone who drew people in. Many of us recall being instantly charmed by him—his warmth, his presence, and his genuine interest in others. He had a rare ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and reassured. In moments of uncertainty, Greg was the calm in the storm—his steady voice, thoughtful guidance, and unshakable confidence reminding clients and colleagues alike that “we’ve got this.”

A nationally recognized patent litigator, Greg devoted more than 40 years to fiercely advocating for his clients. He practiced in a high-stakes arena where fortunes, innovations, and futures hung in the balance—and he met that responsibility with brilliance, integrity, and grace. He was respected not only by those who stood beside him, but also by those across the courtroom. Though Greg earned the distinction of Super Lawyer and Best Lawyer, those titles only begin to capture who he was. To us—and to so many others—he was a truly exceptional lawyer in every sense: steadfast, principled, and deeply human.

Within the firm, Greg was a partner in every sense of the word. A leader and a confidant, he gave selflessly of his time and energy to many facets of the firm. Colleagues leaned on him and trusted him implicitly. He took pride in mentoring others; he didn’t simply meet people—he built relationships. Colleagues became friends, clients became family, and strangers became welcome guests.

Greg’s enthusiasm for life was unmistakable. Whether recalling his legendary rugby days, answering the call to help those in need, or sharing a laugh in the hallway, he lived fully and generously. His faith was evident not in words, but in the way he treated people—with kindness, patience, and humility. His love for his family was quiet, steady, and profound—a constant foundation throughout his life.

Greg’s presence—both personal and professional—will be deeply missed. We are better for having known him, for having worked alongside him, and for having called him our friend.

It’s 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀—and from an IP perspective, it’s also a masterclass in trademark strategy.

What began as a single trademark for a collegiate basketball tournament has grown into an entire ecosystem of protected brands surrounding the same event. The 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 mark, owned and enforced by the 𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗔, now sits alongside a portfolio of adjacent trademarks covering everything from tournament rounds and broadcasts to merchandise, licensing, and promotions.

The takeaway for brands and businesses: a strong core trademark can be leveraged to build—and defend—an expansive brand presence. Smart trademark strategy doesn’t stop at one name; it anticipates how an idea will grow.

Wood Herron & Evans attorneys 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 and 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻s are back from 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗔 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼, where they presented on four intellectual property topics for game designers and publishers.

Dave’s takeaway:
“Designers and publishers are eager for practical IP guidance — how to protect mechanics, branding, and what makes a game distinctive. They clearly see IP as part of the broader business strategy.”

Sean’s perspective:
“GAMA Expo highlights just how much the tabletop industry runs on individual creativity. Designers are constantly crafting new player experiences within a collaborative community.”

Always great to engage with innovators who are building the next generation of tabletop games. 🎲
