Scripps Ranch is named for the family that bought it for $5,000 back in 1890.

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps and his half-sister Ellen Browning Scripps purchased 400 acres on the mesa and named it 'Miramar.' They planted the eucalyptus groves that still line Pomerado Road today — a $5,000 land buy that quietly shaped one of San Diego's most established neighborhoods.

Tierrasanta used to be a Marine Corps training base — most people who live there now have no idea.

The land was Camp Elliott from 1941 until the Navy deactivated it in 1946, sold to the City of San Diego in 1961, and finally became the community of Tierrasanta in 1971. Locals still call it 'The Island in the Hills' — only four roads lead in.

The first European to set foot on what's now the U.S. West Coast landed right here in Point Loma.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo came ashore in 1542, and Cabrillo National Monument marks the spot today. Long before Point Loma was a real estate market, it was the literal starting point of California's written history.

Bay Park was mapped out in 1887, decades before most of the homes around it existed.

It started as the 1,200-acre Morena Subdivision, later rebuilt in 1936 as the Bay Park Village Subdivision. One quiet fact locals love: Jim Morrison of The Doors attended Longfellow Elementary School here as a kid, long before any of this became a Mission Bay view lot.

Coronado isn't an island. It just plays one on postcards.

Technically, Coronado is a tombolo — a sandbar peninsula built up by wave action that connects it to the mainland via the Silver Strand. No bridge required to reach it by land, though most people take the bridge anyway because the drive along Orange Avenue is half the point.

San Diegans once voted to cut a freeway straight through Balboa Park — and later voted to stop it from getting bigger.

In 1941, residents approved a 200-foot right-of-way through the park by an 8-to-1 margin, and the Cabrillo Freeway opened in 1948 as the city's first freeway. By the 1960s, Caltrans wanted to double it to eight lanes — public protest stopped the expansion, and it remains four lanes through the park today.
