Friends, we wanted to share some *good news that happened late yesterday. The US House of Representatives passed a bill amending the Public Safety Officer Benefit Program to mandate that mental injury, including PTSD, su***de and TBIs suffered by law enforcement and all first responders is considered line of duty, based on Washington, DC, Police Officer Jeffrey Smith's case. GWPLLC won this fight at the local level, when Jeff's death was declared line of duty in March, from injuries he received on January 6th. This does the same at the federal level, and will help so many future injured officers and families. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it has broad bipartisan support, with a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee, followed by a Senate Floor vote, next week. In March 2022, the District of Columbia found that Jeff's direct and sole cause of death was injuries he received on January 6th, 2021. Today, Goodwin Weber PLLC filed its opening brief, on behalf of deceased Washington, DC, police officer Jeffrey Smith and his widow, Erin Smith, for line of duty benefits for Erin. Officer Smith was one of three police officers to die in the aftermath of the Capitol Insurrection. Jeffrey Smith, a police officer who confronted a mob in the Capitol, later shot himself. His widow blames the riot, and is asking for full death benefits.

Friends and neighbors - the Accomack County Circuit Court remains closed to trials and in person hearings. However, the Accomack County General District Court has reopened. In addition, Maryland Circuit Courts on the Eastern Shore are starting to have in person hearings, although we have not seen trials resume. We hope you and your family remain safe during this difficult time.
