A message for my friends who are losing their jobs or having hours cut:

As you are making plans for life after the mill, or if you are dealing with shutdown days: please take a pause before making big financial decisions. In my 29 years of practicing law, I have seen many clients after job loss. It's tempting to use your retirement savings to pay off or "pay down" debts, including house, cars, and unsecured debts like credit cards. While this may seem like a good idea at the time, please consider talking with me about your other options. Bankruptcy sounds intimidating, but it is a way to protect your family's future. Your retirement savings are safe when you file bankruptcy. You can keep your IRA or 401k. Roll it over. There is no shame in filing a bankruptcy—its a survival tool. You'd be surprised at how many of your friends and neighbors have filed a bankruptcy over the years. I would be happy to talk it over with you.
