🎃 Halloween is two weeks away, and this year it falls on a Saturday. Expect a long evening of trick-or-treaters on Chicago sidewalks, with sunset around 5:40.

A little prep now beats a scramble on the 31st:

- Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags. It costs a few dollars and makes a child visible from much farther away.
- Choose costumes that do not block vision. Face paint is safer than a mask that slides over the eyes.
- Pack a flashlight or glow sticks so kids can be seen at every crosswalk.
- Plan the route ahead of time, sticking to well-lit blocks and corners with crosswalks.

Drivers: on Halloween night, slow down on residential streets, watch for kids stepping out between parked cars, and take extra care backing out of driveways.

📝 The other driver's insurance company sent you something to sign. Read this first.

After a crash, the paperwork often arrives before you have finished seeing doctors. Two documents deserve real caution:

- A medical authorization. Many are written broadly enough to open your entire medical history, going back years. Old records get used to argue your injury was there before the crash.
- A release that comes with a quick settlement offer. Once you sign it, the claim is usually over for good, even if your injury turns out to be worse than anyone knew.

You are generally not required to sign either one for the other driver's insurer. Their job is to close the file for as little as possible. Yours is to understand what your claim is worth before anything becomes final.

That shift matters more than people realize. Pedestrian crashes climb once the light goes, particularly between 5 and 7 in the evening when everyone is heading home on foot.

If you drive:
- Slow down near crosswalks and intersections, including the ones with no signal.
- Clean your windshield. Grime and glare cost you real seconds of reaction time.
- Look before turning right. That is where people get hit.

If you walk:
- Assume the driver has not seen you until you watch them slow down.
- Cross at corners, where drivers are actually expecting someone.
- Anything reflective on a bag or a coat helps more than you would guess.

Illinois drivers are required to yield to people in a crosswalk. It is still worth making eye contact before you step off the curb.

We hear this constantly, and it stops people from making a call they should make.

Illinois uses modified comparative fault. In plain terms: if you were partly responsible, you can still recover, as long as your share is not more than half. Your recovery is then reduced by your percentage.

To illustrate the math: if a claim were valued at $100,000 and you were found 20 percent at fault, you would recover $80,000 rather than nothing at all.

Two things worth knowing:

- The insurance company does not get to decide your percentage. Adjusters often assign a large share of fault early, because it costs them nothing to try.
- Fault is disputed far more often than people think. Police reports get amended. Witnesses turn up later.

Do not talk yourself out of a claim based on someone else's first guess about fault.

Opening your car door into a bike lane without looking is illegal in Illinois. It also puts a cyclist on the ground in moving traffic with no warning at all.

The fix takes one second. Open the driver's door with your right hand instead of your left. Reaching across turns your shoulders and your eyes toward traffic automatically. It is sometimes called the Dutch Reach, and it works.

If you ride and it happens to you:

1. Call the police and make sure a report is filed. Dooring is a reportable crash in Illinois.
2. Get the driver's information, not just an apology.
3. Photograph the door, the lane, and your bike.
4. See a doctor even if you feel fine. Adrenaline hides a lot for the first few hours.

It depends on what the driver was doing at the moment of the crash, and there is often more coverage available than people assume.

Generally:

- App closed, driver offline: their personal auto policy.
- App on, waiting for a ride request: limited rideshare coverage applies.
- On the way to a rider, or carrying one: a much larger commercial policy is typically in play.

As the passenger, you are almost never the one at fault, which puts you in a strong position from the start. You may have claims against the rideshare driver, another driver, or both. Nobody from those companies is going to walk you through that.

One practical tip: screenshot your trip receipt before you do anything else. It timestamps exactly where the driver sat in that sequence.

What actually strengthens a claim, roughly in order:

1. Photos of the exact hazard, taken before it gets cleaned up or repaired.
2. An incident report filed with the business that same day.
3. Names of anyone who saw it happen.
4. Medical records that begin right after the fall, not three weeks later.
5. The shoes you were wearing. Keep them.

The most common mistake is waiting. Hazards get fixed, security video gets overwritten, and memories fade.
