π After a crash, the insurance adjuster often calls within days. They sound friendly. They ask for a recorded statement.
Here's what most people don't know: you are not required to give one to the other driver's insurer.
That call isn't about helping you. It's about locking in your words early, before you know the full extent of your injuries, so they can be used later to reduce or deny what you're owed.
A few things worth remembering:
- You can decline politely. "I'm not giving a recorded statement right now" is a complete answer.
- You don't have to guess. "I don't know yet" is better than an estimate you'll be held to.
- Injuries can surface days later. Saying "I'm fine" on day two can follow you for months.
- Talk to a lawyer first. It costs you nothing to ask.
We've helped injured drivers, passengers, and pedestrians across Chicago and the suburbs understand what their claim is actually worth before they talk to anyone.
