Statement from Civil Rights Attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, who represented the family of George Floyd, on the Minnesota Republican tribute to Derek Chauvin.

“The audacity of the Minnesota Republican Party to honor an individual who has both been convicted by a jury of his peers for the murder of a fellow human being, while at the same time violated a professional oath to protect and serve his community, is disgusting.

As the legal team who fought for civil justice for George Floyd and systemic legislative change to improve policing in his name, we are sickened by this lack of respect and urge all who planned and participated in this tribute to deeply reflect on the rule of law.

We call on Minnesota GOP leaders to issue an immediate retraction of this immoral act and issue an apology to the family of George Floyd and to the people of Minnesota that they serve."

Founding Partner Antonio Romanucci had the deep honor of meeting His Holiness Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican on May 28, as part of a Chicago delegation accompanying Mayor Brandon Johnson.

The trip, organized and sponsored by World Business Chicago, included corporate and civic leaders from the city to discuss issues and events of importance and to convey Chicago’s deep respect for the Pontiff, who was raised in the Chicago area.

Founding Partner Antonio Romanucci appeared as a panelist on May 21, 2026, at an event hosted by the Arab American Bar Association of Illinois and moderated by Retired Judge Bill Haddad. The event was part of the bar association’s Diversity & Inclusion Series and was titled “Holding ICE Accountable: Legal Strategies Against ICE Abuse.”

Other panelists included Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and NYU School of Law Professor Alicia Bannon. In the discussion, Tony discussed the firm’s representation of U.S. Citizens in Chicago who had their Constitutional rights violated in their encounters with federal agents in Fall, as well as the case of Renee Good, who was shot and killed by a federal agent in Minneapolis in January.

“Saveion should be alive today. Based on the facts we know so far, the deputy’s use of deadly force appears completely unjustified. Saveion was an unarmed teenager. The deputy struck Saveion with his police car—using his vehicle as a weapon—moments before shooting Saveion to death. We do not believe Saveion posed any imminent threat that would have justified the use of deadly force. We will work tirelessly to gather all information, video, and witness testimony, with the goal of holding those responsible accountable for taking this young man’s life,” said Senior Attorney Joshua M.
