Congratulations to our partner Larry R. Rogers Jr., who will receive the Illinois Bar Foundation’s 2026 Distinguished Award for Excellence on Friday, October 16, in Chicago.

The award is the Foundation’s highest honor. It recognizes a person whose career and personal life reflect a steady commitment to the law and the legal community.

Larry has spent more than 30 years representing people with catastrophic injuries and families who have lost loved ones. His cases have taken on hospitals, trucking companies, corporations, and cities, including civil rights cases in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Cedar Rapids.

He has also given his time to the profession. He is a past president of the Cook County Bar Association, the oldest association of African American attorneys in the country. In 2020, he became president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, only the second African American to hold that office. He is a member of the Inner Circle of Advocates, and he supports the NAACP, Operation PUSH, and local churches across the city.

Sprietsma v. Mercury Marine, 537 U.S. 51 (2002)

In 1995, Jeanne Sprietsma tragically lost her life after falling overboard and being struck by a boat's propeller. Her family sued Mercury Marine, alleging the motor was unreasonably dangerous because it lacked a propeller guard.

After Illinois courts dismissed the case, the family appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, with Power Rogers, LLP attorney Joseph A. Power, Jr. among the attorneys on the family's briefs.

On December 3, 2002, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of the family, confirming that federal boating safety law did not prevent them from pursuing their state-law claims.

More than two decades later, Sprietsma v. Mercury Marine remains an important precedent in product liability law, preserving the rights of injured individuals and families to hold manufacturers accountable.

When one client was injured in a bicycle crash, the defendant driver had just $50,000 in available insurance coverage. Power Rogers, LLP, partner, James Power, kept digging.

Through his work on the case, Mr. Power identified additional insurance coverage through the driver’s employer. The employer disputed that the driver was an employee and argued that, even if he was, he was not acting within the scope of his employment because he was traveling home at the time of the collision.

Mr. Power continued to pursue the claim, ultimately securing an additional $415,000 through the employer’s insurance for his client resulting in a total settlement of $475,000.

In May 2024, a 75-year-old man was walking from Walgreens after picking up medicine for his wife when he was struck and killed by a City of Joliet utility truck while crossing the street. He is survived by his wife and three adult children.

For two years, Larry R. Rogers Jr. and Dominique Rogers worked alongside his family to understand how this happened and hold those responsible accountable. Their work ultimately resulted in a record settlement for the family.

While nothing can undo their loss, we are proud to have stood with this family during an incredibly difficult time and helped them find answers and accountability.
