Our CGLA team was honored to join St. Leonard's Ministries last night for The Heart of Saint Leonard’s: A Night of Fellowship. 💙

This , we’re celebrating partnerships like this one. Through our work with SLM, we provide free legal services, record relief, and re-entry support so that the men and women in their programs can move forward without a past record holding them back.

We celebrate the healing and hope SLM creates every day. As one participant put it: “Now, I am so in love with my future.” 🥹

A legacy of service. A commitment to justice. 💙
 
More than 25 years ago, CGLA founding attorney Charles “Chuck” Hogren became one of Darryl’s mentors, inspiring an approach to practicing law that he carries with him today: putting clients’ needs first. Looking back on his career, Darryl says what he’s most proud of is being an attorney. 

For Darryl, the work has always been about more than practicing law. It’s about sharing his knowledge and helping people who may not have the financial resources to access the legal support they need. 

On September 25, Darryl celebrated another anniversary with CGLA. During our Root Down to Rise Up Fall Cocktail Reception, we had the privilege of presenting him with the Cornelius Staff Award, honoring his dedication, service, and contributions to our mission. 

Today, we’re sharing a special tribute reflecting on Darryl’s career, the people who inspired him, and his continued love for the work. 

Darryl, thank you for carrying forward a legacy of service and reminding us what it means to put people first. You are part of CGLA’s roots, its story, and its lasting impact.

How to Change the World is a new documentary series that explores the transformative power of social entrepreneurship. 

This episode tracks a real pro bono case, through partnership with Cabrini Green Legal Aid, Dentons, and Paladin, from issue spotting through resolution, bringing viewers inside the legal process and demonstrating just how powerful pro bono support can be in helping people navigate our justice system.

More than 50 years ago, Cabrini Green Legal Aid was founded to serve residents of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green community, standing alongside individuals and families navigating systems that too often created barriers instead of opportunity.

Today, seeing 99 new homes come to Cabrini-Green through Parkside Phase V is a powerful reminder of what it means for communities to grow, rebuild, and remain rooted 🥹💙💪🏽

CGLA’s work has expanded far beyond the neighborhood where our story began, but Cabrini-Green will always be part of who we are.

We celebrate this investment in housing, community, and the families who will call these homes their own and the continued work toward a Chicago where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

October is Pro Bono Month! ⚖️💙

At CGLA, pro bono isn’t just something we celebrate. It’s an essential part of how we expand access to justice.

For more than 20 years, our Criminal Records Relief Help Desk at the Daley Center has helped thousands of people navigate the legal process and move toward a fair chance. We couldn’t do this work at the scale we do without the attorneys who volunteer their time, skills, and expertise to serve our clients.

Throughout October, we’re celebrating our pro bono partners, taking you inside the work of our Help Desk, and sharing more about what it means to help close the justice gap—one person, one case, and one fair chance at a time.

Last week, we stepped away from the day-to-day to celebrate CGLA’s legacy, our impact, and the community that makes this work possible. 

Root Down to Rise Up is about honoring the people, history, and legacy that have shaped CGLA for more than 50 years while looking ahead to what’s possible.

As we continue to grow and navigate what comes next, we remain rooted in our mission, our community, and the belief that everyone deserves a fair chance. 

Through stories, awards, videos, and moments of connection, we celebrated the people who have shaped our work and those helping carry it forward.
