Some good news out of Beermann LLP. The firm and 18 of our attorneys were recognized in the 2026 Chicago Family Law rankings by Doyle’s Guide, and Beermann was named among the Leading Family, Matrimonial & Divorce Law Firms in Chicago for 2026.

It’s nice to be recognized, but the real credit goes to a group of people who are very good at what they do and take this work seriously. Watching this team grow and earn this kind of recognition is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Who gets the dog?

It sounds like a simple question, until it becomes one of the most emotionally-charged battles in a divorce.

I’ve seen pets become pawns in negotiations. I’ve seen fur children used to inflict emotional harm on the other spouse. And I’ve seen couples spend more time fighting over their Labrador than their investment portfolio.

The law is evolving. Courts are no longer treating pets as just property. And for high-net-worth couples, the costs of pet care: vet bills, grooming, specialized diets, travel, can be significant.

PetNups exist for a reason. Plan ahead before emotions take over.

My first job was at age 9. My goal? To get a cool 10-speed bike. I cut my neighbor’s lawn and formed perfect lines with pride to get there. It taught me the value of hard work from a young age. Fast-forward nearly 50 years, and that same work ethic has led to being an equity partner at one of the largest family law firms in Illinois and building a powerhouse team of more than a dozen attorneys. What’s something you worked hard for at a young age that helped shaped you today? And yes, I earned that bike in record time ;-)
