On April 1st, the US Dept of State announced reforms to modernize the Foreign Service. Updates include testing applicants on US history, foreign policy & reasoning, while removing ideological screening as well as emphasizing core skills, economic strategy and diplomatic history. Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said “the Trump administration is modernizing the Foreign Service to prepare America’s diplomats to advocate for our national interest on a dynamically changing world stage.”

We at Immigration Attorneys, LLP expect these reforms to have a major impact on non-immigrant and immigrant decision issuance at Consular Posts and Embassies outside the U.S.

The U.S. Supreme Court is considering a challenge to a 2025 Executive Order that seeks to limit birthright citizenship. The Executive Order seeks to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. if their parents are not citizens or permanent residents. The case centers on the 14th Amendment, which has long been interpreted to grant citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil. A decision is expected by summer 2026. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that there were 1.1 million undocumented entrepreneurs in the US in 2023. Shannon Shepherd, our Chicago-based lawyer, explained that U.S. citizenship is not required to own a business, nor do business owners need to prove their immigration status. With deportations on the rise, undocumented business owners can lose a lot, and so can their U.S.-born employees.
