In a lot of places, you don’t have to set foot in a courtroom to get divorced.

In Chicago, you don’t even need to appear on Zoom... you can just email the paperwork to the judge. But Chicago requires that both parties have an attorney to do this! If either party is self-represented they have to show up on Zoom or in person.

1) Don’t blow off a deadline for responding to discovery requests. You don’t have an agreement yet! If you want to save money and focus on settlement ask to extend the deadline.

2) On the flip side, make sure you have what you need document wise from your ex. In the event you have to go to a hearing or trial, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to compel discovery production.

P.S. Discovery= the process of requesting and exchanging information and documents from the other side in your court case. This can be interrogatories (written questions), notice to produce (a list of documents you want them to provide, e.g. bank statements, tax returns etc.) and depositions

The specific language about price reductions is:

Should JANE not receive an offer to purchase the Marital Property within thirty (30) days of listing the home for sale, JANE shall reduce the listing price by three percent (3%) of the original listing price and shall continue to make additional necessary price reductions in conjunction with realtor recommendations.

Note if you include provisions about listing price and price reductions, consider asking to incorporate your divorce agreement by reference only so that realtors and home buyers cannot see this document in the public record.

If you do not get the QDRO pre-approved, you might go through all of the work of having it drafted and entered only to have it rejected by the retirement provider (e.g. Fidelity, Vanguard etc.)

QDRO=Qualified Domestic Relations Order and it is used to divide a retirement account such as a 401k.
