Social Media Usage Policy

The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism (2Civility) has created social media pages to engage members of the profession and the public in an informative conversation about our ongoing commitment to professionalism, civility, and inclusiveness within the legal and judicial systems and to promote more equitable, effective and efficient legal and judicial systems. Our goal is to facilitate constructive dialogue, and we want our social media pages to be an appropriate forum for everyone. In administering our social media pages, we are cognizant of the Rules of Professional Conduct, including Rule 8.4 that provides that it is professional misconduct for a lawyer to “violate the Rules of Professional Conduct or knowingly assist another to do so” or “engage in conduct involving dishonesty” or that is “prejudicial to the administration of justice.” We are also guided by the Preamble to the Rules of Professional Conduct which provides that lawyers “should seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession.”

Therefore, all conversations and posts herein should be constructive, respectful, and contain language that is appropriate for lawyers and judges as well as all groups and ages. We, therefore, reserve the right to disallow comments that are:

i) obscene, indecent, profane, or vulgar
ii) contain threats or personal attacks of any kind
iii) contain offensive terms directed to ethnic or racial groups
iv) are defamatory, libelous, or contain ad hominem attacks
v) promote or endorse a product or service
vi) excessively repetitive or constitute 'SPAM'
vii) or otherwise would, in the sole judgment of the 2Civility staff, tend to violate the Rules of Professional Conduct. Comments that do not adhere to the above guidelines will, without exception, be removed. In cases of repeat offenses, we will take action to block offenders from the page.

Only 20% of lawyers who experienced bullying said they reported the behavior to a supervisor, upper-level attorney, or human resources.

And just 22% of those who reported bullying said that their employer committed to taking appropriate action against the bully.

What should leaders in the legal profession include in an anti-bullying policy to address and prevent bullying in their organizations? We share recommendations in our Bullying in the Legal Profession report and in a recent article by Executive Director Erika Harold. https://hubs.li/Q04Bjg8F0

It’s been two years since our landmark report Bullying in the Legal Profession: A Study of Illinois Lawyers’ Experiences and Recommendations for Change was released.

Since then, we have:

✅ Collaborated with organizations nationwide to present the report, including the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility, National Organization of Bar Counsel, and The American Board of Trial Advocates, among others

✅ Partnered with the Illinois State Bar Association, The Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association, and almost 30 bar associations across Illinois to host a bullying prevention summit with 830+ attendees

✅ Launched a Stand Up to Bullying Challenge for lawyers and bar association leaders

✅ Developed a judicial training titled “Bully-Free Zone: Judicial Tools for Preventing Bullying in Legal Proceedings and Workplaces,” and trained nearly 240 Illinois judges on strategies for addressing bullying in courtrooms during the Supreme Court of Illinois Judicial College’s 2026 Education Conference

✅ Presented “Judicial Toolkit: Techniques and Strategies for Combating Incivility, Bullying, and Sexual Harassment” at orientations for new Illinois judges

✅ Incorporated bullying-prevention-focused content into the Commission’s Lawyer-to-Lawyer Mentoring Program

✅ Developed and delivered live bullying prevention CLEs to organizations throughout Illinois, including the Illinois Government Bar Association, Women's Bar Association of Illinois, DuPage County Bar Association, Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association - IRELA, and more

✅ Developed a Bystander Tip Sheet of strategies lawyers can use to intervene when they witness bullying

And the American Bar Association has adopted Resolution 523, encouraging legal organizations to address bullying and develop studies similar to the Commission’s report.

We have more in store, including further collaborations and a free, online CLE on bullying prevention in the legal profession.

We want to thank all those in the Illinois and national legal communities who continue to advocate for a healthier and more effective profession for all lawyers.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and we encourage all legal professionals to revisit the data from our study. https://bit.ly/4dzGd3c

A recent study of 37,000 lawyers across the U.S. found nearly half (47.5%) screened high for work-related burnout, and 41.1% said that time in the legal profession had been "detrimental to their mental health."

Moreover, 27% said they have considered leaving the profession due to mental health issues.

The study says it's the largest multi-jurisdiction lawyer mental health survey to date, and the first time lawyer burnout and work-life conflict have been explored at this level.

A study of 37,000 lawyers found that 48% screened high for burnout and 41% said the profession had been detrimental to their mental health.
