When you put your child on a school bus, you trust that the person behind the wheel is qualified to be there.

In Illinois, school bus drivers must meet specific licensing, training, background check, and medical examination requirements. Those safeguards matter, especially when a serious accident raises questions about whether the driver was properly cleared to operate the bus.

Our latest blog looks at a tragic 2023 Park Forest school bus accident, the qualifications Illinois school bus drivers must meet, and what families should know if a child is injured in a school bus crash.

When first responders are injured in the line of duty, recovery is only one concern.

Questions about salary, medical treatment, accrued leave, pension credits, and long-term benefits often follow close behind.

Under Illinois law, eligible police officers, firefighters, and paramedics may be protected by both the Public Employee Disability Act, commonly called PEDA, and the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act.

PEDA may provide:

• Continued salary for up to one year
• Protection of sick leave, vacation time, and compensatory time
• Continued pension service credits

Workers’ compensation can provide medical treatment, compensation for a permanent injury, wage-differential benefits, and other protections.

PEDA does not apply to everyone. City of Chicago employees are generally excluded, while first responders working for many suburban municipalities and smaller Illinois jurisdictions may qualify.

Read our latest blog to learn who may be eligible, how PEDA and workers’ compensation work together, and what to do after a line-of-duty injury: https://stromlawyers.com/injured-in-the-line-of-duty-peda-and-workers-compensation-for-illinois-police-officers-and-firefighters/

Chicago’s second season is here: construction.

That means orange cones, lane closures, sidewalk detours, resurfacing, scaffolding, utility work, and building projects across the city.

Construction is necessary, but it can also create real safety risks for drivers and pedestrians.

Drivers should watch for:
• Sudden stops and lane shifts
• Workers and equipment near the road
• Construction vehicles with large blind spots
• Pedestrians forced into new walking patterns
• Confusing or temporary signage

Pedestrians should watch for:
• Closed or shifted sidewalks
• Blocked crosswalks
• Poor visibility around fencing or equipment
• Turning vehicles near intersections
• Uneven pavement, debris, ramps, cords, and metal plates

Whether you are behind the wheel or walking near a job site, a few extra seconds of caution can make a major difference.

Summer in Chicago means more bikes, scooters, pedestrians, rideshares, buses, and cars sharing the same streets.

But many riders do not realize one important thing:
In Illinois, bicyclists are treated much like drivers.

That means cyclists generally have the same rights as motorists on the road, but they also have many of the same responsibilities. If there is a stop sign, a cyclist is expected to stop. If there is a red light, a cyclist is expected to wait. Riders should travel with traffic, yield when required, and use caution at intersections.

Scooter riders should be careful too. A quick ride across town can still lead to a serious injury if a driver fails to yield, opens a car door, blocks a bike lane, or turns without looking.

A few summer safety reminders:
🛑 Stop at stop signs and red lights
🚴 Ride with the flow of traffic
🚘 Watch for opening car doors
🔦 Use lights, especially at dusk
🚍 Be careful near buses, trucks, alleys, and intersections
🚶🏻‍➡️ Slow down around pedestrians
👷 Wear a helmet whenever possible

Drivers also have a responsibility to share the road. They should watch for bikes and scooters before turning, opening doors, or entering bike lanes.

Whether you are using a car, bike, scooter, or anything else on wheels to get around Chicago, it’s crucial you understand the laws to keep yourself, and others, free from harm.
