Sheila Kerwin and Kelly Magnus from Nilan Johnson Lewis PA (Minnesota & South Dakota) have published an article discussing the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC, issued on May 14, 2026, that held freight brokers can be sued under state negligent-hiring law when they select motor carriers with documented safety deficiencies. The ruling removes a federal preemption defense that the brokerage industry has relied on for years and has immediate implications for the transportation and logistics sector. Mayer LLP, ALFAI’s member firm in Houston, TX, secures appellate victory in a cross-border transportation case involving a bus collision in Mexico involving Texas plaintiffs and a related U.S.-based transportation company. The court found no evidence that the Mexican company was “at home” in Texas and rejected arguments that the companies operated as alter egos. It also concluded there was no substantial connection between the company’s Texas-related contacts and the claims arising from the collision in Mexico. Read more: https://bit.ly/3Qrp1rb

The 2026 Seminar wrapped up last Friday. Aside from gaining valuable insights, attendees were treated to an array of entertaining networking events, including a sunset dinner at the Myrtle & Rose Rooftop Garden, a lively celebration at Savannah Smiles Dueling Piano Bar, a Savannah Scavenger Hunt and a dinner at Olde Pink House.

It was a memorable finish to an incredibly successful seminar! A huge thank you to the 2026 Program Chair, Christopher Page, from Young Moore and Henderson, P.A. (Raleigh, NC), and the Business Litigation Practice Group Chair, John Osgathorpe, from Taylor Day Law (Jacksonville, FL), for putting on a spectacular seminar!

Practice Group Seminar is in full swing in Savannah, Georgia!
The sessions center around this year’s theme, “Business Litigation at Midnight: Strategy and Judgment in the Garden of Good and Evil,” where the presenters explore how today's commercial litigators must navigate a complex world where technology, perception and strategy overlap, and how the best lawyers guide their clients through it.

The seminar perfectly balanced educational sessions with unique networking activities. The Women's Initiative hosted a networking event featuring a mixology tutorial, and some attendees toured the Savannah Bee Company’s Garden and Meadery to learn about sustainable beekeeping and mead-making. Cheers to Clementine Uwabera from Stafford Rosenbaum LLP for organizing an engaging Women’s Initiative event!
