While attending an ABA Litigation Section conference in Washington this weekend, I learned about civil rights leader Charles Hamilton Houston, who is quoted as saying:

A lawyer’s either a social engineer or … a parasite on society … A social engineer [is] a highly skilled, perceptive, sensitive lawyer who [understands] the Constitution of the United States and [knows] how to explore its uses in the solving of problems of local communities and in bettering conditions of the underprivileged citizens.

This quote (taking from Howard University’s website) is a good reminder that of obligations that I have to make my community a better place and that my legal training gives me a unique skill set to achieve that goal.
