On October 15, HSPRD Shareholder Kalman Resnick joined faith and community leaders, including Aurora Mayor John Laesch, at a press conference hosted by CAIR-Chicago and SACRED Acts, speaking on behalf of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA).

The leaders gathered to condemn the foiled attack targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora. As Kalman noted, the threat reached beyond Indian and Hindu communities to African Americans and Jews as well.

Sharing his own family’s history (three of his cousins, including a two-year-old, were arrested in Paris in 1942 and murdered at Auschwitz in 1943), Kalman pledged the Jewish community’s support for its neighbors:

“We know that the best way to protect ourselves against hatred is to unite with all who are vulnerable, and to fight hatred and those who support it or spread it.”

As Latine Heritage Month comes to a close, HSPRD is proud to celebrate Chicago, a city home to and strengthened by diverse, vibrant Latine communities. HSPRD joins Chicago in honoring advocates in the Latine community who have fought to advance equality and celebrating cultural events throughout the city highlighting Latine artists.

Chicago is home to the National Museum of Mexican Art, one of the best Mexican American art museums in the country, that has recently opened the new exhibition, “Where Memory Lives: 40 Years of Día de Muertos.” The Chicago Public Libraries also have hosted and continue to host a range of events, including events honoring the iconic labor activist Dolores Huerta, book talks, and film screenings. During this time, HSPRD also acknowledges the harm and trauma that Latine community members and advocates have experienced as a result of federal ICE actions in our community. Since January 2025, 52 people have died in ICE custody, the highest rate in over a decade, and reports count at least 23 people who have been shot at by federal immigration agents, including Marimar Martinez of Chicago and Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez of Franklin Park, who was killed.

HSPRD stands in solidarity with community partners, advocates, and our neighbors who are directly affected by ICE’s continued intimidation and dehumanizing operations. HSPRD believes in the rights of everyone to live safely in their community without being racially profiled. HSPRD’s fight for accountability on behalf of the family of Robert L. Brooks Sr. has resulted in a historic $24 million settlement with the state of New York. Robert was brutally beaten to death by correctional officers in a New York prison while he was handcuffed and defenseless. The body-worn camera footage of Robert’s final moments shocked the nation and forced a long overdue reckoning with the prevalence and degree of violence inside New York’s prison system.

HSPRD Partner Elizabeth Mazur led our team in the fight for justice for Robert’s family, bringing creativity, dedication, and an unwavering belief in what justice should look like. “No amount of money can bring Robert home,” said Mazur, “but this outcome sends a powerful message that the horrors Robert endured cannot be overlooked or excused.”

“We hope this settlement brings a measure of peace to Robert’s family and serves as a catalyst for reforms that are long overdue,” said HSPRD Partner Kate Schwartz, another member of the legal team.

HSPRD is grateful to the Brooks family for placing their trust in us throughout this case, and to our co-counsel at Faraci Lange, LLP for their partnership in securing this outcome.
