$1.5 million dollar jury verdict yesterday for a client who was hit by a truck that aggravated a prior back injury.

Update on a Jury verdict from 2018. Yesterday the 7th Circuit, in a 3-0 ruling, upheld a $20 million dollar award to our client injured by defective mesh. The case was tried by Tom Plouff from our office.

The Chicago City Council approved part of a settlement that was reached 6 days into a recent trial handled by our firm in May. The case involved the death of a 7 year old killed by vehicle owned and operated by a non employee vendor of the City of Chicago, while she was standing in the middle of the roadway. The initial offer from the City was zero.

On the 6th day of trial, the parties reached an agreement to settle the case for a total of $5 million dollars. $4 million dollars is being paid by the City of Chicago based upon a theory of Agency for the acts of the City Vendor whose company’s vehicle struck and killed the young child. $1 million dollars is being paid by the vendor. This was their total available insurance policy limits.

As an important side note, this tragedy unfortunately highlighted the inequality of resources apportionment to various neighborhoods around the City of Chicago.

After this lawsuit was filed, the City made substantial improvements to the intersection - making it much safer for pedestrians.

Hopefully the City will continue to invest in improving other underrepresented areas of the City, especially in dangerous intersections near schools.

After 40 years of slaying giants in the health and construction industries on behalf of the little guy, Bill Burke has retired. Bill's last jury trial was January of this year and resulted in a 4.2 million dollar verdict on behalf of a Local 134 Electrician.

We have elevated partner David Gilbreth to named partner. David recently had three 7 figure verdicts within a 14 month period. Including two, 7 figure verdicts within 8 days of each other. Congratulations David.

We wish Bill Burke a happy and healthy retirement and welcome David to his new position.
