I've been teaching at the UIC law school since 2017, and despite my hectic schedule, I'll always make time to continue teaching in the evenings until 9pm after working all day because it gives me the opportunity to mold the next generation of lawyers. But also, more importantly, to increase diversity within the law school faculty so that students of color can see professors who look like them on the other side of the room because representation matters. When I was in law school, I only saw 2 Latino professors, both of whom were male and never saw a LATINA because the number is even less.

The Trump administration, ICE, and DHS are the ones violating the Constitution and not respecting our laws! They are using shady tactics dismissing cases in order to initiate expedited removals to detain individuals outside of the courthouse and strip them of their due process rights, when these individuals are following the law and pursuing legal relief to remain here lawfully.

February 28th - Economic Blackout

In response to Trump’s Executive Order 14151, titled “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” a nationwide economic blackout is scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025. This 24-hour protest, organized by grassroots movements, aims to demonstrate public dissent against the dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Participants are encouraged to refrain from all non-essential spending, particularly avoiding major corporations, to underscore the economic influence of collective consumer choices. The protest emphasizes the power of unified action in challenging policies perceived as undermining social progress and equity.

The blackout has gained momentum through social media platforms, with organizers urging individuals to support local businesses if purchases are necessary during the protest period. The initiative seeks to highlight the potential economic impact of marginalized communities and their allies when they withhold spending, aiming to pressure policymakers to reconsider actions that may disproportionately affect underrepresented groups. This form of peaceful protest reflects a broader strategy to advocate for the preservation and advancement of DEI programs within both public and private sectors.
