A U.S. Army private first class continues to receive treatment after suffering severe injuries as a bystander in a May 23, 2026, shooting near the White House. Joseph Murphy, a former Army officer and a partner at Clifford Law Offices, which represents the soldier, said in a statement that the firm is investigating the incident and gathering all available facts to develop a full understanding of the events that caused his client's injuries. A bystander wounded during an exchange of gunfire near the White House last month is an active-duty soldier and is still being treated for his wounds, according to the law firm he has retained.

A U.S. Army soldier who was visiting Washington, D.C., suffered severe injuries after being shot during an exchange of gunfire near a White House security checkpoint on May 23, according to a report from NBC Washington. Investigators have determined that the soldier was struck by gunfire from the U.S. Secret Service and remains in recovery following surgery. Clifford Law Offices, which represents the injured soldier, said it is investigating the incident, gathering facts, and working with authorities to better understand the events that led to the shooting. Benjamin Del Real was shot by the Secret Service, multiple sources tell News4. The violence began when Nasire Best, 21, opened fire near a checkpoint.
