Corboy & Demetrio Partner Daniel S. Kirschner has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the drowning of a DuSable Harbor boat captain, affectionately known as Captain Bill. The lawsuit, filed in Cook Co. Circuit Court, names the Chicago Park District's harbor management company, Westrec, for allegedly failing to provide security, which enabled a trespasser, also named in the lawsuit, to access the dock and assault Captain Bill. In 2016, Corboy & Demetrio Partners Philip Corboy, Jr. and Edward G. Willer received a Trial Lawyer Excellence Award from the Jury Verdict Reporter, a division of Law Bulletin Media, for their $6 million settlement in a premises liability case. The award was presented to them at the 7th Annual JVR Awards, which recognizes the case and career achievements of Illinois trial lawyers.

Nearly 32 years ago, a pedestrian was struck and killed by falling chunks of ice on Michigan Avenue that had fallen off a building. The legacy of the lawsuit subsequently filed by Corboy & Demetrio — ”Caution, Falling Ice” signs that we see today.
