Happy First Generation Lawyer Day!

While I am technically the first lawyer in my immediate family, thereby learning the ropes without the guidance of parents who are lawyers, I’ve been blessed to learn many important lessons from my parents, mentors, and role models along the way.

From my Aunt Elizabeth, a judge in Los Angeles, “rise to the occasion.”

From my dad, a family doctor in small town Indiana “work hard and treat others right.”

From my mom, a wise homemaker “never put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want Grandma or me to see.”

From the most intense law professor I’ve ever encountered, “doing the right thing only matters when it’s hard.”

From a family law attorney I admire, “we are what we repeatedly do.”

In all things, I strive to work hard, do the right thing, accept the challenges before me, and choose my words carefully. Being a good attorney requires discipline, knowledge, understanding, and ethical decision-making, every single day. Whether you’re the first in your family to do it or you come from a long line of lawyers, the job is not easy, but it’s a career that allows you to apply wisdom from all around you to become the exact type of lawyer you were meant to be.

I think a lot about AI and best practices so I wrote about it in the most recent KCBA Bar Briefs Magazine.

No AI was used in writing my editorial, but I can say with confidence that at our firm, we embrace changing technology and use it to do great work for our clients, as long as that use is safe, legal, and ethical.

No computer could ever replace the experience and heart I put into my work.

Last night the advice I gave had more to do with life than with law. Once it became clear the client had nominal financial recourse, it was about empowering them with solutions. How do you move on after a difficult employer? How do you find a job after leaving one sooner than anticipated? How do you make ends meet while you seek employment? How do you believe in yourself after someone makes you feel small and powerless?

I truly believe you do the best work when you remember that we are all human. Through Administer Justice we connect with people and meet them where they are.

Administer Justice has several clinics in the Fox Valley area, and their approach to legal services is thorough, effective, and aligned with my values. I look forward to going back next month! If you’re an attorney looking to volunteer, or if you’re in need of low cost legal services, please check them out.

Had the privilege of speaking to students at Rotolo Middle School today with my extern, Donovan Schumpert, a 3rd year law student at Northern Illinois University. The students did a great job practicing different persuasive styles, and they asked great questions about the practice of law, getting into law school, and the use of AI in the profession.

The future is bright!

Honored to once again be recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyers Rising Star — a peer-driven distinction awarded to only a small percentage of attorneys. This marks my fourth time receiving this recognition, and I’m grateful to the colleagues and clients who make this work possible.

✨ New Blog Post ✨

If you’re a co-parent, chances are you’ve felt it,that lingering guilt.
Guilt for the relationship ending. Guilt for missing moments. Guilt for not giving your kids the “traditional” family you thought they deserved.

But here’s the truth:
💡 A separated family is not a broken family.
💡 Your love, presence, and consistency matter more than perfection.

In his latest blog post, Martin talks about where co-parenting guilt comes from, how to tell the difference between guilt that helps you grow and guilt that holds you back, and practical steps to move forward with more grace and less blame.

If you're a co-parent, chances are you're carrying some guilt. Whether the split was recent or years ago, it has a way of lingering, showing up at school

'When a Family Ends but No One Notices'

When families break apart, the grief isn’t always simple — and sometimes it isn’t even recognized.

What happens when you’ve loved and raised children who aren’t “legally” yours? When the relationship ends, so often the bond is treated as if it never mattered. But it does. Deeply.

In our latest post, Martin Kendall share's some of his own story of losing not just a partner, but a family. He talks about the love, the loss, and the invisible grief that many stepdads, bonus dads, and father figures carry in silence.

💔 This is a story for anyone who has ever built a family in their heart, even if it wasn’t official on paper.

If it resonates with you — or if you know someone who might need to hear they’re not alone — I’d love for you to share it.

There was no custody hearing. No goodbye party. No paperwork to sign. Just a silence that settled in the house, and the ache of absence that most people

Modifying an agreed allocation judgment is not a simple process. Even when it seems so obvious to you and everyone around you that something should change, the law and local courts value stability for our children, so it’s best if you can work with your co-parent either through attorney-assisted settlement conferences, formal mediation, or an agreement to appoint a parenting coordinator to handle day-to-day issues as they arise.

That being said, if your co-parent continually violates your allocation judgment, often the best route is not to try to modify it, but to file the necessary pleadings to enforce what’s already been ordered.

Either way, don’t lose hope. There’s always a way to improve co-parenting when you have experienced counsel on your side.
