Happy Monday! Onboarding our newest team member today! Reflecting on the power of mentorship in the legal profession.

Today is my paralegal’s first day, and I am so incredibly excited! Two reasons: 1) it means I am growing as a business owner and as a lawyer. And 2) I am honored and excited to mentor this bright young woman! Today, she will come to my office and learn the ropes of my case management system, compl...

For life’s milestones, there are gift registries. For times of need, there are meal trains. Did you know there’s a divorce registry too? It’s okay to ask for help. Sometimes, in the midst of divorce, friends and family don’t know how to show up for you, but they want to show they care. So help them to help you! Create a divorce registry! You need new sheets, new silverware, a coffee maker? Let your community know!

For this, and so much more, there’s Fresh Starts Registry, Divorce Support Network & Registry, an online community full of insightful people who can help you find the resources you need during your divorce.

They also have a podcast, hosted by co-founder Olivia Dreizen Howell, full of wisdom and practical ways to move through the process healthy and hopeful. I found this particular episode, about a divorce in which no one is the “villain” or wrongdoer, particularly powerful for people who may find themselves in a similar situation. Olivia reminds her co-parenting listeners that “you’re not ending the relationship, you’re changing its form.”

Every day I have to remind my clients that the law is meant to be equitable to both sides, regardless of “fault,” and that no-fault divorce is actually a good thing, because it means you don’t have to prove wrongdoing to leave a marriage. The law focuses on the best interests of children and the equitable distribution of the marital estate.

It’s up to you how you choose to focus on the rest. For the emotional side, the decision-making, implementing new boundaries, and coping with the new normal, I highly encourage divorce coaching, like we offer through my husband and business partner, Martin Kendall. I also recommend finding resources that allow you to move forward rather than social media “influencers” who might keep you stuck in the past.

If this resonates, check out Fresh Starts. Create a registry! Move forward knowing people want to help you succeed, and use that help to do just that.

Happy First Generation Lawyer Day!

While I am technically the first lawyer in my immediate family, thereby learning the ropes without the guidance of parents who are lawyers, I’ve been blessed to learn many important lessons from my parents, mentors, and role models along the way.

From my Aunt Elizabeth, a judge in Los Angeles, “rise to the occasion.”

From my dad, a family doctor in small town Indiana “work hard and treat others right.”

From my mom, a wise homemaker “never put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want Grandma or me to see.”

From the most intense law professor I’ve ever encountered, “doing the right thing only matters when it’s hard.”

From a family law attorney I admire, “we are what we repeatedly do.”

In all things, I strive to work hard, do the right thing, accept the challenges before me, and choose my words carefully. Being a good attorney requires discipline, knowledge, understanding, and ethical decision-making, every single day. Whether you’re the first in your family to do it or you come from a long line of lawyers, the job is not easy, but it’s a career that allows you to apply wisdom from all around you to become the exact type of lawyer you were meant to be.

I think a lot about AI and best practices so I wrote about it in the most recent KCBA Bar Briefs Magazine.

No AI was used in writing my editorial, but I can say with confidence that at our firm, we embrace changing technology and use it to do great work for our clients, as long as that use is safe, legal, and ethical.

No computer could ever replace the experience and heart I put into my work.

Check out the latest outstanding contributions from our members of the KCBA in the Kane County Bar Briefs Generative AI issue for March/April 2026. It's an essential read for practitioners looking to stay informed about the evolving landscape of AI within the world of law.
