Next week’s World Photography Day (August 19th) serves as a good reminder that a picture is worth a thousand words… and dollars.

In the personal injury and wrongful death world, photographs are evidence, evidence proves a legal case, and the existence (or lack thereof) of photographs can make or break that case. Therefore, if you (or someone with you) is physically capable of capturing them, take photographs. Document the scene. Document the bad damage. Document your visible injuries. Your lawyer will thank you later.

The big, bad, evil insurance company does not always exist.

Are those shocking words to come from a personal injury and wrongful death law firm? Perhaps. But if you know Seeskin Law LLC at all, you know that pronouncement is actually not shocking at all.

When an attorney representing an injured party effectively communicates with an insurance company or attorney representing the party who caused the injury, when both sides are willing to engage in dialogue, when disputes focus on civilly debating what really matters and not fighting over small things that don’t, and when opponents each commit to upholding truth and objectivity, amazing results follow.

Does that mean Seeskin Law LLC likes all insurance companies, gives them a free pass, or avoids trial? Not a chance in the world. Even my children know that, which is partly why they jokingly sing insurance jingles to get on my nerves. But Seeskin Law LLC does negotiate and litigate in good faith, and it’s a true pleasure when the other side does the same.

It’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs at Seeskin Law LLC this week because dinner in the Seeskin household serves as a reminder that car accident cases are not all the same.

At home, turkey meatballs brought all of us to the table for family dinner… but my daughter ate them with ketchup (don’t judge), my son ate them with marinara sauce, and my husband and I ate them with za’atar roasted vegetables, pomegranate arils, garlic hummus, harissa, preserved lemon tahini drizzle, and pearl couscous.

At work, many Seeskin Law LLC clients find themselves facing a cloudy predicament after a car accident such as a rear end collision at a red light. But much like the meatballs, though the generic case description remains the same, the details of what my clients endure are individualized and distinctive… a pregnant mother miraculously surviving when her vehicle looks unrecognizable, a person emotionally staying upbeat even when the shifting in their vehicle seat caused perpetual low back pain, concussion and post concussive syndrome symptoms making daily life a constant struggle, the distracted driver having violated the ban on handheld electronic devices while driving, etc.

Should Seeskin Law LLC be located in Chewandswallow instead of Chicago? Perhaps. Either way, this is what the law firm brings to the table.

Personal injury and wrongful death lawyers often develop two types of unconventional humor as part of their practice.

“Gallows humor” serves as a coping mechanism for legally navigating very traumatic experiences faced by our clients. The humor is so dark it bears not repeating here. Suffice it to say it would not make good sitcom material.

“Contributory negligence humor” arises where a fact pattern is so bizarre and a person’s injuries are so predominantly due to their own fault that no viable legal case exists and prospective clients get turned down. Think overdosing oneself on clearly marked edible brownies, getting blackout drunk with relatives and allowing one whom you know is drunk to drive you, or having severe food allergies yet choosing to eat a cuisine heavily reliant on those allergens. PI/WD lawyers maintain professionalism but recognize it would sometimes make good sitcom material.

Neither type of humor is comedic gold because at the end of the day, someone was hurt or killed, but levity certainly helps in this profession. What helps in yours?

Today is World Chocolate Day. Yesterday marked the anniversary of Forrest Gump’s theater release. But what do World Chocolate Day, Forrest Gump, Seeskin Law LLC’s love of chocolate, and the legal world have in common? Everything.

Seeskin Law LLC needs someone to hum the jingle for NBCUniversal’s “The More You Know” public service announcements. That’s because beginning July 1st (next week!), new laws take effect that impact the personal injury and wrongful death world.

• Illinois Vehicle Code: Illinois will now have uniform classifications and operational standards for e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices. (SB 3484, anticipated to become Public Law shortly, with more regulations to follow on January 1st)

• Illinois Vehicle Code: Drivers aged 79 through 86 will no longer have to take a behind-the-wheel road driving test based on their age alone. (Road Safety & Fairness Act, Public Act 104-0169)

• Illinois School Code: The definition of cyberbullying will now include the use of AI to create or distribute sexually explicit or harmful images of students, and school districts will be authorized to step in when it harms student well-being and education. (Public Act 104-0338)
