“The proof is in the pudding. During our most contentious times our daughter was burdened. Her teachers told us she seemed sad at school. No wonder. She lived in a thinly veiled war zone. Now I'm watching her thrive in both households. We attend her events together, verbally and tangibly support each other, and share occasional family vacations. She has a peaceful home. Now she skips to school and sings while she plays. Thank God we got here in time, before her childhood slipped away. David's a great mediator. Very competent. 10/10, would hire again.”

“Finding David Louis as our mediator was invaluable. His unique combination of mediation expertise and financial knowledge made a world of difference. He guided us through dividing assets, including preparing complex retirement accounts forms… and crafted a thorough agreement with all necessary documents ready for our divorce attorney. This minimized our workload and significantly sped up the uncontested divorce process.”

“David is a mediator's mediator. I was referred to him by a colleague for my personal divorce mediation, and he skillfully guided a process which truly transformed me and my family dynamic. I have not experienced that type of transformation outside of therapy, but this wasn't therapy. It was a series of conversations with an almost infuriatingly neutral/calm third-party (David) who led my co-parent and me through lots of big feelings to full agreement on parenting time, division of assets, child support, and long-term boundaries. More importantly, it led us into being back on the same team, working together for the good of our child––instead of adversaries emotionally throwing sand at each other across the beach.”

Some of the most important decisions in a divorce settlement are financial in nature, and the uncertainty extends to future expectations regarding financial security. One or both spouses may need time and information to process the inevitability of a new financial reality. There are lots of issues to consider: paying for two households, financing a new mortgage, dividing retirement accounts and pensions, child financial needs, and possibly reentering the workforce. In divorce mediation, I give couples the opportunity to communicate and plan for their new financial circumstances and explore options with as much research and time as needed.

I share with clients the options for establishing home value—from a mutual agreement on its value to hiring professional appraisers for expert opinions. Trying to arrange for single ownership after divorce is part of the discussion. In mediation, you discuss all the options and make the final decision about what works best for your situation. It may take some time to explore refinancing options, but that research contributes to a well-informed decision that is worth the effort.

Individual meetings

In mediation, couples need to be ready for hard conversations—going beyond mistrust and improving communication. I meet individually with you to help each of you be more prepared to speak in joint sessions so you can feel free to speak without fear of being misunderstood.

“Letting go of the past is a good thing. It doesn’t mean forgetting, it just means moving on. Because the fact is, we can’t enjoy the present and embrace the future when we are still stuck in the past.” — Don Dewberry

I agree, and that is a reason why I value mediation. It is a future-focused process where I encourage my clients not to dwell on the disappointments of the past but instead to stay in the present with each other and reach agreements that provide for the future of the family in new circumstances.
