Some previously secret details in complaints against South Carolina judges will be made public for the first time, but the jurists’ names will not be among them, The State newspaper of Columbia reported.

The information will be in the form of summaries, and it will include the action taken against the judges, the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered Wednesday.

“We believe there is a need to better balance the existing rules of confidentiality in judicial disciplinary matters, with the right of the public to know how cases are being resolved,” the state’s five justices wrote in their order, per The State’s report. “Such knowledge and understanding are critical to ensure the public has confidence that ‘an independent, fair and competent judiciary will interpret and apply the laws that govern us.’”

Jay Bender, the attorney for the South Carolina Press Association and The State, praised the ruling.

South Carolina will publish summaries of complaints against judges for the first time, though jurist names will remain confidential, the high court orders.

WASHINGTON — States can block the country's biggest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid money for health services such as contraception and cancer screenings, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

The 6-3 opinion by Justice Neil Gorsuch and joined by the rest of the court's conservatives was not directly about abortion, but it comes as Republicans back a wider push across the country to defund the organization. It closes off Planned Parenthood's primary court path to keeping Medicaid funding in place: patient lawsuits.

The justices found that while Medicaid law allows people choose their own provider, that does not make it a right enforceable in court. The court split along ideological lines, with the three liberals dissenting in the case from South Carolina.

In a case involving a federal inmate’s administrative tort claims alleging a violation of due process and wrongful confinement, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a litigant who files a notice of appeal after the original appeal deadline but before the court grants reopening need not file a second notice after reopening.

The ruling reverses a decision from the 4th Circuit, resolving a circuit split.

BULLET POINTS: “A notice of appeal filed after the original deadline but before reopening is late with respect to the original appeal period, but merely early with respect to the reopened one. Precedent teaches that a premature notice of appeal, if otherwise adequate, relates forward to the date of the order making the appeal possible.

In a significant endorsement of contractual delegation, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a U.S. District Court’s third refusal to compel arbitration between the plaintiff, a public school district, and the defendant, an insurance brokerage.

The panel held that, having found the parties’ 2002 and 2003 brokerage service agreements (BSAs) valid and enforceable, the district court was obliged to honor their incorporation of the American Arbitration Association’s commercial rules — which unmistakably assign the question of arbitrability to the arbitrator — rather than deciding that issue itself.

The litigation began when the plaintiff asserted state‑law fraud, negligence, and breach‑of‑fiduciary‑duty claims over insurance placements and fees. The defendant invoked the BSAs’ arbitration clauses, but the district court denied three successive motions.
