Sepsis rarely announces itself. It shows up as a rising heart rate, a falling blood pressure, a fever that was charted and not acted on.

That is why these cases are built out of records rather than recollection. Vital sign trends, nursing notes, lab timestamps, when cultures were ordered and when antibiotics were actually administered.

The gap between the first abnormal reading and the first meaningful response is often where the case lives.

Delayed recognition is one of the more common patterns we see in hospital negligence claims, and it is one of the reasons we read the chart before we form an opinion about the care.

Senate Bill 452 changed something in North Carolina that almost nobody is talking about.

Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage is what steps in when the at-fault driver's policy is not enough to cover what they did to you. Insurers used to be able to reduce a UIM payout by subtracting whatever the at-fault driver's insurer already paid. That offset has been eliminated.

The same law also raised North Carolina's minimum liability limits to 50/100/50, the first increase since 1999.

For seriously injured people, the change to UIM is the more significant of the two.

A tractor-trailer case does not begin with the police report. It begins with the records the motor carrier is holding.

The engine control module that logged speed, braking, and throttle in the seconds before impact. The driver qualification file. Hours of service records. Maintenance and inspection history. Some of these can be lawfully overwritten or discarded on a routine retention schedule, which is why a preservation letter often needs to go out within days of a crash rather than weeks.

This is Child Passenger Safety Week, and the number worth knowing is that a large share of car seats are installed or used incorrectly.

The common ones are harness straps left too loose, the chest clip riding at the belly instead of armpit level, a seat moving more than an inch at the belt path, and a child moved forward-facing or out of a booster earlier than they should be.

NHTSA runs free inspection stations, and there are certified technicians across Mecklenburg County who will check a seat at no cost.

One of the first questions we get asked is who covers the medical bills while a case is still pending.

The answer usually starts with your own coverage. Health insurance, and often the medical payments coverage on your auto policy, can pay for treatment while the claim moves forward. Those payers may later assert a lien against any settlement, which gets resolved at the end rather than the beginning.

What catches most people off guard is that the at-fault driver's insurer typically pays nothing along the way. They pay once, at resolution, which can be a long time from the date of the injury.

Labor Day started as a recognition of what working people built, and of what it cost them to build it.

North Carolina's workers' compensation system exists because that cost was once carried entirely by the injured worker.

Today it covers medical treatment and a portion of lost wages regardless of who was at fault, handled through the Industrial Commission rather than the courts.

The tradeoff is that the system has its own rules, its own deadlines, and its own forms. Missing one can matter as much as the injury itself.
