AI legal help is basically a Halloween costume. Dressed perfectly for the part. Sounds right, looks right, uses all the right words. Completely convincing from across the room. But the moment your situation gets specific, complicated, or genuinely high-stakes, the mask comes off. There's no one underneath who actually knows your business or has any stake in what happens to it.

Looking like legal advice and being legal advice are two very different things.

AI is not your legal problem. Trusting it with the wrong tasks is.

There are things AI genuinely does well in a legal context: learning terminology, summarizing long agreements, tracking renewal dates, orienting yourself to an unfamiliar area of law. For companies with real in-house legal teams, AI tools built on their own contract history can meaningfully accelerate certain workflows. None of that is in dispute and none of it is the concern.

The concern is what happens when AI gets handed the judgment calls. Generally, when something is not a retrieval task, AI does not perform well. Regardless of whether AI has done a good job or not, its output always looks flawless. This is the illusion, and it is a harder one to see through than most founders realize.

AI legal advice isn't most dangerous when it's obviously wrong. It's most dangerous when it sounds completely right.

AI-generated documents read with the same confident, authoritative tone whether they're accurate or not. No hedge, no flag, no indication that a jurisdiction-specific requirement was missed. A founder who receives a polished document has no signal that anything is wrong, and that gap between the illusion of legal protection and actual legal protection is where real risk lives.

Lawyer Overkill is real, and it costs more than the invoice. It costs you the deal that walked, the closing that missed its window, and the founder who eventually decided to just wing it legally rather than go through that again.

Winging it is never the move. Neither is counsel that makes your business harder to run.
