Today is Read Across America Day, where books for children are celebrated across the country. When children experience the separation and divorce of their parents, it's important for them to have resources too. NC-CAN recommends books for children that explain divorce in relatable ways through storytelling. Here are some our favorites: http://bit.ly/3tfNNLm

If we listen to and hear children as they experience divorce, we will never forget their message. As one child put it: divorce is like something you love breaks and you can’t put it back together. SPLIT UP: The Teen Years shows us, through the powerful voices of children, that even though the love between the parents in the marriage may be broken, putting the love of their children first in the divorce can put the pieces together in a way that makes children feel whole.

Mermans, owner of Road to Resolution - Divorce Mediation & Collaborative Family Law, and Irene King, founder of King Collaborative Family Law. 🎙 The trio delve into the significance of collaborative practices and the future of divorce law in general. ⚖️

The Uniform Civil Collaborative Law Act was signed into law 7/1/20. It paves the way for civil practitioners to resolve civil disputes through the collaborative process. This is a win-win for lawyers and clients to engage in respectful, intelligent and constructive conflict resolution and to effectively settle business, employment and other civil disputes outside of the archaic court system. Tremendous thanks to the father of this legislation, John Sarratt, the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), the North Carolina Civil Collaborative Law Association and many others who contributed to making this milestone happen. The past days witnessing the hoarding of necessities and everyone-out-for him/herself mentality show that when we’re panicked, we don’t act reasonably or from a place of compassion for others and a concern for the greater good. For divorcing couples who may have to bind together for their kids out of school or adult children retreating home from college, we can do better and treat each other with dignity and respect. Choose the collaborative approach. For those settling into listening to a lot of podcasts, here’s a short episode sharing why I’ve chosen to be a collaborative lawyer. https://linktr.ee/humanlawyer
