We had the cutest visitor to our Greensboro office this morning!

He may be small, but he’s already got the bulldog determination it takes to fight for injured workers.

When it comes to workers’ comp, we don’t back down—and apparently, neither does he!

Sumwalt Anderson & Spence is proud to announce that all three attorneys have been selected to Best Lawyers for 2027. Mark Sumwalt, Rick Anderson, and Casey Spence were all selected for their service to Workers' Compensation claimants, while Rick was also selected for his practice in Personal Injury.

"Recognition in Best Lawyers reflects the confidence and respect of fellow lawyers who know the work and the profession. For more than 40 years, Best Lawyers has been grounded in a simple principle: the best lawyers know who the best lawyers are.

Recognition is determined through our peer-review process, not through paid placement or self-nomination, and no fee is required to be considered or recognized. This independent process has remained at the heart of Best Lawyers since its founding in 1981."

Our firm is proud to continue in their representation of injured workers. If we can assist you in your claim, give us a call today.

We recently held our last mediation in our old Greensboro office. Stay tuned this week for photographs of our new and improved Greensboro location!

In the meantime - let's talk about mediations!

A workers' compensation mediation is a meeting where you, your attorney, the insurance company typically represented by a defense attorney, and a neutral mediator work together to accomplish things in your claim.

Things to know:
- They can be in person, or virtual, or a combination of both.
- A mediator doesn't decide who wins or loses or how much your claim is worth.
- An injured worker is not required to talk in front of the defense. You won't be cross examined. Your attorney will do the talking for you in the opening.
- After the openings, the rest is in private sessions, where the injured worker asks questions, receives advice, and ultimately is the one who decides the path forward with their attorney.
- You don't lose any rights by participating in a mediation. In fact, it is usually required before moving forward with a hearing.

Mediation is simply an opportunity to explore your options. Whether your case settles or not, having an experienced workers' compensation attorney by your side helps ensure your rights are protected every step of the way.

This weekend, we celebrate more than fireworks and family traditions: we celebrate 250 years of America.

For two and a half centuries, our nation has been built on the enduring ideals of liberty, justice, opportunity, and the rule of law. As attorneys, we are proud to uphold those principles by advocating for our clients and helping ensure that justice remains accessible to all.

This Fourth of July, we honor the generations who fought to secure our freedoms, those who continue to defend them, and the communities that make our country strong.

From all of us at Sumwalt Anderson & Spence, we wish you and your family a safe, joyful, and patriotic Independence Day.

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸

Our offices will be closed Friday in celebration!

Our team had a fantastic time attending the North Carolina Advocates for Justice Annual Convention! It’s always an incredible opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the state, learn about the latest developments in the law, and discuss the cutting edge of our practice. Staying current on emerging legal issues helps us continue providing the highest level of representation for our clients.

We’re especially proud of our own Casey Spence, who led the Workers’ Compensation Section Meeting after completing a one-year term as Chair. Casey’s leadership and dedication to advancing the practice of workers’ compensation law reflect the commitment our entire firm brings to advocating for injured workers every day.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and continue growing as advocates for our clients. We can’t wait to put what we’ve learned into practice!

Big news for injured workers in North Carolina! 📜✍️

For the first time in decades, our state is making critical, long-overdue updates to workers' compensation benefits. With the Governor's Signature on North Carolina House Bill 315, injured workers will soon see a significant increase in some types of compensation.

Here is a breakdown of the major changes taking effect on July 1, 2027:

🔹 Doubled Disfigurement Maximums: The maximum compensation for serious facial or head disfigurement is increasing from $20,000 to $40,000. Serious bodily disfigurement limits are also doubling, moving from $10,000 to $20,000.
🔹 Organ & Internal Damage Protection: Maximum compensation for the permanent loss or injury of an important internal or external organ or important body part is doubling from $20,000 to $40,000.
🔹 Total Disability Minimums: The minimum weekly benefit for total disability is increasing from $30.00 to $50.00 per week.

As advocates for injured workers, we celebrate these statutory adjustments. While a monetary increase can never truly replace your health, doubling these decades-old caps is a massive step forward in ensuring North Carolinians receive the equitable support they deserve after a workplace injury.

Do you have questions about how these upcoming statutory changes might affect a current or future claim? Our team is always here to help you navigate the changing landscape of NC Workers' Compensation law.
