Association of Catholic Diocesan Archivists ACDA offers continuing education and networking opportunities to advance and promote the professional management of Catholic Diocesan Archives.

Members are from across the United States, Canada, and throughout the world. New members welcome anytime! Here to serve the specific needs of the Roman Catholic diocesan archivist, ACDA offers a variety of information and support to both veteran and beginning archivists. The Association of Catholic Diocesan Archivists is committed to the active promotion of professionalism in the management of dio

cesan archives in North America as reflected in our work to establish an archival program in every diocese and to assist bishops and chancellors in the development of such programs (as outlined in the Bicentennial Statement on Ecclesiastical Archives issued by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States and in the February 2, 1997 Circular Letter, issued by The Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, entitled The Pastoral Function of Ecclesiastical Archives). We promote a regular system of education and training programs, including both basic archival training for newly appointed archivists and continuing education for those who are further advanced in the field. We promote a channel for personal contact, communication, and information for all Catholic diocesan archivists. We strive to develop guidelines and other aids to enhance the operation of Catholic diocesan archives according to canonical and professional standards. We provide a forum for discussion and action in technical matters that are unique to the administration of Catholic diocesan archives. We promote contact and cooperation between Catholic diocesan archivists and others in the archival profession, on the international, national and regional levels We represent Catholic diocesan archivists before organizations such as the Canadian and United States national bishops’ conferences, these countries’ Canon Law Societies, ecclesiastical archivists in other countries, as well as researchers and the general public. And we raise the consciousness of others as to the necessity and value of Catholic diocesan archives.

Today, on the , we highlight the 2024 theme: Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future. This year’s focus emphasizes education’s role in protecting and empowering youth to reduce disaster risks.

In honor of this day, the ICA is proud to release Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness: A Manual for Protecting Archives, by Margaret Crockett and Emilie Gagnet Leumas in collaboration with the ICA's Expert Group on Emergency Management and Disaster Preparedness. This essential guide offers practical advice on disaster planning, risk management, and protecting vital records, ensuring archives can recover and thrive.

A new list of Native boarding schools affiliated with the Catholic Church was released today. The list offers details about 87 Catholic-run Native boarding schools across 22 states. It includes the name(s) of each school, the location, the dates of operation, the Catholic diocese(s) in which it operated, the tribal nations impacted (as listed in historical documents), and the religious order(s) that ran and/or staffed each school. This list expands and corrects information available about Catholic-operated schools that appear on previous lists of Federal Indian Boarding Schools published by the Department of the Interior and by the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. It also provides guidance on where archival material for each Catholic-operated school may be located.
