Well, we did it: We picked out a new girl pig to sponsor at Ironwood Pig Sanctuary! Her name is Penny Lane, which fits perfectly with our other recent sponsored pigs Henry ("Henry the 8th") and Eleanor ("Eleanor Pigby"), the latter who just passed away and was the reason for our special visit. Penny Lane, who used to be called Penelope until they ended up with too many Penelopes, is a special gal who was born with some defects that resulted in basically a smushed-looking face, which we think makes her even cuter!
Here is a brief summary from Julia Ewer, the sponsorship coordinator at Ironwood:
"Penny Lane arrived on Valentine’s Day 2025. Her human was moving and didn’t want to take her along. He said his sister had “dumped” her on him two years prior and he had no interest in having a pig. So sad for this sweet girl!
Penny Lane was taken to the vet clinic in order to get spayed. Unfortunately, they were unable to do the surgery because her trachea is deformed and they were not able to intubate her to undergo anesthesia. We try to spay the females even though all our males are neutered because around 85% of intact females develop uterine tumors as they age. Hopefully, that will not be the case for Penny Lane.
There must not have been much socialization at her previous home because Penny Lane was reluctant to be touched. Over time, she has gotten more comfortable with that and lets us pet her now. Relaxing enough to lie down for a belly rub is still a dream, but we’re getting there and are just happy that she is here with people who love her and care about her. Sadly, this made caring for Penny Lane when her eye troubles started a bit difficult.
In August 2025, Penny Lane was having some eye trouble. We took her into the vet where she was diagnosed with conjunctivitis and put on several different eye medications. She wasn’t a huge fan of us having to get close and personal to administer the 4 different medications in her right eye but she tolerated it well as long as she was distracted by food or juice. After about a month, her conjunctivitis was cleared up but her dry remained so Penny Lane continues to get eye meds once a day, however, now it is only one eye med.
At the beginning of October 2025, we started introducing Penny Lane into Northeast field along with 5 other pigs. One of these pigs is Gracie Mae, whom she’d become friends with a couple of months prior. It took a couple of months, and Penny Lane proving to be a bit spicy, holding her ground with the other pigs, but she is fully integrated into the herd! The reason for this process taking so long is due to staff always needing to be present to watch over the pigs so that when they fight to establish hierarchy in the herd and over territories and shelter, we can break them up quickly and keep them from hurting themselves and each other.
Penny Lane is doing great and enjoying her life here. She is 10.5 years old and in good health. Her face is a bit deformed and crooked, which gives her a unique, precious appearance."
Welcome, Penny Lane, to the Joan Bundy Law family of sponsored rescue pigs!
