🌳 Let’s Talk Trusts!

We’re frequently asked: “How much money do I need to have for a trust to make sense?”

The answer may surprise you! đź’ˇ

There’s no magic dollar amount that makes a trust the right choice. It all comes down to your goals and what you want your estate plan to accomplish.

For example:

• Is avoiding probate important to you?
• Do you have young beneficiaries or loved ones who may need help managing an inheritance?
• Are you planning for a blended family?
• Do you have a loved one with special needs?

These are just a few of the factors we consider when helping clients decide whether a trust makes sense.

Today, trusts are usually less about minimizing estate taxes and more about control, flexibility, and protecting the people you love.

Think of a trust as your own “book of instructions” for how your finances should be managed during your lifetime and after your death—rather than relying on Ohio’s default rules.

And it’s not uncommon for someone to come into our office thinking they only need a Will, only to discover that a trust may be a better fit for their goals!

✨ The bottom line? You don’t have to be wealthy to benefit from a trust. You just need to know what you want your estate plan to accomplish.

🌳 Day 3 of Estate Planning Awareness Week: Let’s Talk About Wills!

Many people assume that once they’ve signed a Will, their estate planning is complete. But a Will is just one piece of the puzzle!

Here are a few important things to know about Wills:

⚖️ A Will doesn’t avoid probate. A Will only directs how assets that go through probate are distributed after your death. If avoiding probate is a priority, a Will alone probably won’t get you there.

💰 A Will doesn’t let you control an inheritance after it’s distributed. Once an adult beneficiary receives their inheritance, they’re free to manage that money however they choose. That can be a concern if your beneficiaries are young adults or aren’t experienced with managing money.

👧 Planning for minors has its limits, too. A properly drafted Will can designate a custodian to manage assets for a minor until age 25 under Ohio law. But a Will doesn’t provide legally binding instructions for how and when funds should be used.

💵 A Will is only a death plan. It takes effect only after you die, so it doesn’t address what happens if you become unable to manage your finances or make health care decisions during your lifetime. It’s crucial to pair your Will with solid powers of attorney.

A Will is an important estate planning tool, but it may not accomplish everything you want for your family. 🌳

The key is choosing the right plan for YOUR goals, and knowledge is power! Want to learn more about what makes sense for you? Give our office a call! 📞

Welcome back for Day 2 of Estate Planning Awareness Week! đź’š

Many people think estate planning is finished once they sign their Will or Trust. But that’s just the beginning!

You could have the best Will or Trust in the world, but if you overlook Steps 2 and 3, your plan may not work the way you intended.

🌳 Stage 1: Create Your Estate Plan. Make sure you have all the necessary documents, including a Will or Trust and powers of attorney for your finances and health care.

🌳 Stage 2: Title Your Assets Correctly. How your assets are titled—and who is named as a beneficiary—can make all the difference in whether your assets pass according to your wishes.

🌳 Stage 3: Keep Your Plan Updated. New baby? Divorce or remarriage? Kids growing up? Changes in your relationships or the people you’ve named to make decisions? Life changes, and your estate plan should change with it!

🌳 Stage 4: Settle Your Estate. This is when your loved ones put your plan into action. A well-prepared and properly maintained estate plan can make this process much smoother for everyone involved.

✅ Have you completed the first three stages? If you’re not sure, or if it’s been a while since you reviewed your plan, we’re here to help!

🏡 It’s Estate Planning Awareness Week! We’re celebrating by sharing helpful tips and information all week long.

Let’s start with the basics: What is estate planning, anyway?

Estate planning is about more than just what happens if you pass away. An estate plan is just a formal legal arrangement for the management of your personal (usually healthcare) and financial affairs, as well as the distribution of your assets, when you are not capable of handling those things yourself. This could be because you’ve died… or due to a disability, either permanent or temporary.

A good estate plan helps ensure your wishes are honored when it matters most. It isn’t just for the wealthy or the elderly. It’s for everyone!

Follow along this week as we break down the essentials and share ways you can protect your future. đź’š
