Our team of three is made up of Colleen, our founding attorney; Emily, our associate attorney; and Dianna, our office administrator. from UIC Law (formerly The John Marshall Law School) in Chicago, Illinois in 2006 and has more than a decade of legal experience representing individuals and businesses. As a mother and a wife, a sister, and a former caregiver to her mother, Colleen particularly enjoy working with families with young children and those caring for aging parents. She knows how difficult it can be to balance the many responsibilities and plan for the future. Estate planning and probate and trust administration allow me to draw upon Colleen's prior legal experience and long-time commitment to helping and educating others. Emily Bennett is an associate attorney at the firm and a graduate from University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She held various internships throughout law school in diverse areas such as corporate law, alternative dispute resolution, cannabis law, and employment law before ultimately finding her passion in estate planning while interning with Scarola Law. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and taking care of her many houseplants, taking her dog, Patty, to the dog park, and vegan baking.

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀

While we focus on awareness, prevention, treatment, and supporting those affected by breast cancer, October is also a good reminder of something we don’t always want to think about: protecting the people and things we care about most.

An estate plan can help make sure your wishes are known and your loved ones are protected—especially if an unexpected diagnosis or health change means someone else may need to step in and make decisions for you.

Your estate plan may include:
❤️ A Will or Trust to help protect and provide for the people you love
❤️ A Financial Power of Attorney so someone you trust can handle financial matters if you cannot
❤️ A Medical Power of Attorney so someone you choose can advocate for your healthcare wishes
❤️ Advance directives to communicate your wishes about medical care

Estate planning isn't about expecting the worst. It's about being prepared, protecting your family, and making sure your wishes are honored.

This October, take a moment to care for yourself—and take steps to protect the people you love. 🎀

If you’ve been meaning to create or update your estate plan, we’re here to help. Contact our office to schedule a consultation.

Do You Own a Home in Colorado?

Your home may be your largest asset—and one of the most important assets to include in your estate plan.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be several ways to plan for the transfer of your home, including a revocable living trust, beneficiary deed, or other estate-planning strategies.

The right option depends on your goals, family situation, and overall estate plan.

🏡 Don't wait until your family has to figure it out for you.

Plan now. Protect later.

Five Things Your Family Should Know

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know:

1️⃣ Where your estate planning documents are?
2️⃣ Who your attorney is?
3️⃣ Who has authority to help with your finances?
4️⃣ Who should make medical decisions for you?
5️⃣ Where to find information about your important accounts and assets?

Estate planning isn't just about creating documents. It's also about making sure your family knows how to use the plan when it matters.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month 🛡️ — and life insurance is a piece of the estate planning puzzle, not the whole picture. It can replace income, but it won't name a guardian for your kids or say who makes medical decisions if you can't.

That's what an estate plan does.

Back to School, Back to the Basics—Including Your Estate Plan 🎒📚

As the kids head back to school, families are busy checking off supply lists, meeting teachers, and getting back into a routine. But there’s one important family protection checklist that often gets overlooked: your estate plan.

Back-to-school season is a great reminder to make sure you have:

📌 A current will or revocable living trust
📌 Guardians named for minor children
📌 Beneficiary designations up to date on retirement accounts and life insurance
📌 Powers of attorney and health care documents in place
📌 Emergency contacts and important documents organized where your loved ones can find them
Life changes quickly as children grow—and your estate plan should grow with your family.

This school year, give yourself the peace of mind that comes from knowing your family is protected, no matter what happens.

🎓 New school year. New routines. Same goal: protecting the people you love most.

🎓 Sending a Child Off to College? Don't Forget This Important Step.

Move-in day is around the corner! As you prepare your college-bound student for this exciting new chapter, there's one item that often gets overlooked.

Once your child turns 18, they are legally considered an adult. That means, in many situations, parents can no longer automatically access their medical information or handle financial matters on their behalf.

Before they head to campus, consider having these essential documents in place:

✔️ Medical Power of Attorney – Allows someone they trust to make healthcare decisions if they're unable to do so.
✔️ HIPAA Authorization – Permits healthcare providers to share medical information with designated individuals.
✔️ Financial Power of Attorney – Authorizes someone to assist with financial matters if needed.

While we all hope these documents are never needed, having them in place can make a difficult situation much easier for both students and their families.

A little planning now can provide peace of mind.

💍 Wedding Bells Are Ringing... Congratulations!

Summer is one of the most popular wedding seasons—and while you're updating your name, combining finances, and planning your future together, don't forget one important item for your newlywed checklist: your estate plan.

After saying "I do," it's a good time to review or create:

✔️ A will or trust
✔️ Financial power of attorney
✔️ Medical power of attorney and advance directive
✔️ Beneficiary designations on retirement accounts, life insurance, and other financial accounts

Many newlyweds are surprised to learn that beneficiary designations can override what's written in a will, making it especially important to ensure everything is coordinated.

Marriage marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Taking the time to update your estate plan helps protect each other and provides peace of mind for the future.

Congratulations to all the happy couples celebrating this summer! 💕
