A subpoena is more than a request. It is a legal order.

Subpoenas are used to require someone to produce documents, provide records, or appear to testify. In family law cases, they are often sent to banks, employers, healthcare providers, or other third parties who have information relevant to the case.

Ignoring a subpoena can have legal consequences, which is why they should always be taken seriously.

Meet Riley Allen, our newest Administrative Assistant!

Riley helps keep things moving at the front desk and behind the scenes with our billing team, which means she gets a little bit of everything around here. A recent The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, Riley came to TSD with experience in legal services and advocacy, a growing interest in family law, and the kind of curiosity that makes her want to understand how everything works.

She loves learning, isn’t afraid to jump into something new, and has already been a great addition to our Team. We’re so excited to have her here and can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes her.

Welcome to TSD, Riley!🎉

There isn't just one way to calculate child support in North Carolina.

The worksheet that's used depends on your parenting schedule. Most families will fall under either Worksheet A or Worksheet B, and knowing the difference can help you better understand how child support is determined.

Not every divorce can be resolved outside of court, but when it can, there are often significant benefits.

Resolving your case through mediation can save time, reduce legal expenses, and give you more control over the outcome. Instead of leaving important decisions to a judge, you and your spouse have the opportunity to work toward solutions that fit your family and your future.

You've probably heard the phrase "being served," but what does it actually mean?

Service of process is the legal way someone is officially notified that a case has been filed against them. Because there are strict legal requirements for service in North Carolina, it's important that it is done correctly before a case can move forward.

Having an affair doesn't automatically determine custody in North Carolina.

What matters is whether your actions affect your child's best interests. Introducing a new partner too quickly or exposing your child to an unhealthy situation can complicate both your custody case and your co-parenting relationship.

Flat fees sound simple, but they aren't always the most cost effective option.

Every divorce is different. Some cases resolve quickly, while others require more strategy, negotiation, and preparation. Paying one fixed price can sometimes mean paying for work your case never actually needed.

Understanding how a law firm bills, and why, can help you choose the approach that's right for your situation.

A Separation Agreement is a private contract between spouses that outlines how issues such as property, custody, support, and other matters will be handled after separation.

One of the biggest advantages of a Separation Agreement is that it allows you to create a plan before anyone moves out. In North Carolina, you do not have to wait until you've been separated for a year to negotiate and sign one.

For many families, having a roadmap in place before separation can make the transition much smoother.

How couples manage their money does not have to look exactly the same to work. Jenny Bradley, our owner, shared with the U.S. Sun that dividing financial responsibilities based on each person’s strengths, setting expectations around spending, and having regular money check ins can help take some of the tension out of finances.

As Jenny puts it, “When you focus on what you’re building together, the conversation feels more constructive and less like a blame game.”
