We should take caution in determining when children should be tried as adults. It should not happen upon arrest. Yes, we are all painfully outraged at certain crimes but that can’t alone drive punishments for developing brains. Teens & preteens end up spending years in solitary confinement in adult prisons for their safety, which is considered cruel & unusual. Criteria is to consider minor's background, juvenile court record, and willingness to get treatment in the juvenile system. Or if they are deemed “unfit” for rehabilitation or educational consequences within the juvenile justice system along with threat to society. You’d be surprised to learn the outcome of some infamous teens that after serving their time, led productive lives. Others may need mental health supervision for life. We also may need different types of maximum security facilities and extended sentences for teens for those who pose ongoing threat to society, like a lifelong compulsion to commit murder or sexual assault. All of this should be a forensic assessment process.

Courage

Todd Beamer was born in Flint, MI and lived in Flushing, MI until he was about 6 years old. On September 11, 2001 he was on board Flight 93. Along with his fellow passengers, he was instrumental in thwarting the terrorists plans to destroy the Capitol or White House, and murder more Americans. Todd managed to make a phone call from the plane to an Airfone operator, ultimately speaking with Lisa Jefferson. His last words heard by her echo in our minds. It’s the rallying cry of those who would not submit: “Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll”.
