If you commute over Highway 17, you know how fast things can change on the road. If you’re ever in a crash, here are a few simple steps I recommend:

• Get medical attention right away, even if you feel "okay."
• Report the crash to CHP so there’s an official record.
• Take photos if it’s safe to do so.
• Exchange insurance information with everyone involved.
• Be careful with insurance statements until you understand your rights.

I’ve driven Highway 17 for years, and I meet clients in person right here in Santa Cruz County and at my office in Campbell. If you have questions about a Highway 17 crash, feel free to reach out and I’m happy to talk through your situation.

Unfortunately, dog bite cases are part of the work I handle in the community, and staying informed helps keep everyone safer. A few simple habits make a big difference for both families and dog owners.

Keeping dogs leashed in busy spaces helps everyone feel more comfortable, and it also gives you better control if your dog gets startled. It also helps to watch for common body‑language cues like stiff posture, tucked tails, or prolonged staring. These can be early signs a dog needs more space.

For families out walking or playing, giving unfamiliar dogs a little room and asking before approaching can help avoid misunderstandings. Most dogs are friendly; they just appreciate clear boundaries.

And if a bite does happen, getting proper medical attention and documenting the injury is important.

What tips do you use to keep shared spaces calm and enjoyable for people and pets?

We are lucky to live in a beautiful place where people are frequently out enjoying the natural beauty. Bikes and e-bikes are everywhere these days. As helpful and convenient as biking can be, it is important to keep safety at top of mind.

A few reminders : always wear a helmet, ride predictably, and pay extra attention around driveways and intersections where visibility drops fast. If a crash does happen, document injuries, damage, and the scene as soon as it is safe to do so. As laws and rules surrounding e-bikes, safety, and insurance coverage continue to evolve, it is important to contact an attorney quickly if an accident or injury involving and e-bike occurs.

Our community depends on all of us looking out for one another. What safety tips would you add?

Even though school is starting, summer crowds are still heavy in the village and along local paths, which also means more potential hazards. This is a quick reminder to everyone to take it slow out there.

A few quick tips to keep things safe when you are out and about:

• Watch your footing on stairs, ramps, and walkways, especially if there’s sand, water, spills, loose debris, or uneven pavement
• Be extra careful near restaurant patios and outdoor dining areas, where drinks, food, and water can make surfaces slippery
• Slow down when moving between different surfaces, such as stepping off a curb, onto a ramp, or from pavement to tile.
• If you spot a hazard, give others a heads-up when you can. Looking out for one another helps keep our community safer.

Most injuries are preventable with small adjustments, but if someone is seriously injured because a property hazard wasn’t taken care of, it may be worth getting legal guidance to understand next steps.

Stay safe out there!

Pacific Coast Injury Lawyer, APC is proud to support our Capitola Junior Lifeguards this season.

Seeing families out on the sand, kids learning ocean safety and building confidence, and instructors who care deeply about our community reminds us how lucky we are to live and work here.

Here’s to staying safe, looking out for each other, and keeping our beaches strong for the next generation.

Summer in Santa Cruz means Highways 1 and 17 get busier. A quick reminder to slow down, leave extra room, and watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and those who might not know our traffic patterns.

If a crash does happen, take a moment to document the scene and get checked out, even if you feel okay. It’s always better to be safe.
