Livestock doesn't care if you're tired, injured, or busy. Everything still has to be tended to. Nothing ever stops or slows.
And as some of you might know, I did something silly a couple months ago and hurt my leg. I'm currently on crutches and in a wheelchair.
And yesterday morning, I noticed something very wrong with one of our chickens, Gail the Snail.
I quickly called Leah to see when she would be able to get off work.
That was a no-go.
I tried for a very short period of time to catch her using treats. But it became very apparent that that would not be a safe activity for me to continue 😬🤣
So after messaging a couple of my farm folks that live nearby who were tied up for the day, I decided to reach out to my bestie, who was raised around chickens at her Grandpa's house.
You see, when our incredible pet sitter/farm sitter, The Savvy Sitter LLC isn't available, we call Miranda.
Not because of her experience...But because she has a natural skill and natural gentleness with birds. I have never seen a person with no experience be able to catch a chicken like she can 😆👀
Miranda Crooks, Realtor has helped me on the farm over the years with the chickens in many ways, but yesterday she could have saved one of their lives. We certainly hope so.
She quickly told me that she had to stop at her home office and then she could run to Walmart to buy a large net.
She facetimed me and helped me choose the net, and then she was at my house quicker than I thought possible.
We put down a few treats and WHACK - Gail The Snail 🐌 was in the net with NO INJURIES during her capture.
And let me tell you guys, you don't know how fast this chicken is. She is FAST.
Now, we did scare the absolute hell out of every other chicken surrounding her, but we did capture her and I'm able to start her treatment inside.
And one of our roosters named after Whitney Hawkins, Mr. Whittersworth, even told us to back off of one of his girls. What a very good boy he is.
All that to say..

Just like it takes a village to raise a family, sometimes it takes a village to get through the tough times on this farm.

I'm convinced that just your love and commitment to your friends alone could make up an entire village.
