I spoke with 3 different people this week, each of whom got a divorce through the court system; each of whom are now trying to fix the problems with their orders. All three said the same thing. This is a very relevant scene to anyone going through a divorce with children. If you haven't seen this film, it's a good one. The scene shows the parents of a divorce, post decision, post lots of lost time and money on attorneys, post sleepless nights, finger pointing and attacks on one another's character. In the film, The custody was awarded to the mother, after her attorney crippled the father in court. Had this couple gone to mediation instead, it would have been a much different, much better process and outcome. Thankfully, the mother comes around in the end and moving forward, things should get better. Most times, however, the wounds of divorce battles heal very slowly. We got a call the other day from a man who was distraught. For the last six months, he and his wife, have been paying their attorneys to help them to get a divorce. During that time, he and his wife have had many amicable agreements on what to do with their marital property, etc. However, they have both been swayed and discouraged, for one subjective reason or another, by their attorneys, not to live with such agreements and to continue to go to court. Despite this man's dismay, despite his longing to move on, to agree on the issues and to end the spending of time and money, he just had his 6th court appearance and not one issue has been resolved. At this point, the man doesn't just feel at the mercy of the court but of his own attorney. Most people don't know how or when to discontinue their relationship with their attorney. They feel trapped and spend far to much money in the meantime. Doesn't something seem wrong with this picture?
