An E-2 visa may offer a pathway for eligible treaty-country nationals who invest in and direct a U.S. enterprise.

Parents may be considering how much capital to commit. The investor may be preparing to direct the U.S. business. A spouse may be thinking about employment. Children may be approaching an age when their status could change.

Each family member may have a different concern, even when everyone shares the same goal.

You've filled out the forms. You've collected the documents. You're almost ready to submit.

Before you do, ask yourself one final question:

Is there anything about my immigration history or this application that I'm hoping the government simply doesn't ask about?

If the answer is yes, stop.

Don't guess. Don't assume it won't matter. And don't submit something you don't fully understand because you've already spent hours preparing it.

Get the question answered first.

STOP BEFORE YOU FILE if any of these apply to you:

You've had a previous immigration application denied.

You've overstayed or had a period when you were unsure about your status.

You've been arrested or charged with an offense.

Someone previously filed an immigration petition for you.

Your current answers don't match something you submitted previously.

You're not sure how to answer a question truthfully and completely.

None of these automatically means you have a bad case.

They mean you may have a legal question, not simply a paperwork question.

That's when it's worth getting professional guidance before you submit.

Before you file a new immigration application, pull out your old ones.

Your previous applications may contain information about:

• Addresses
• Employment
• Travel
• Relationships
• Immigration history
• Previous petitions
• Prior visa applications

Now compare that information with what you're preparing to submit.

Does everything make sense together?

A difference isn't automatically a problem. But if you find something inconsistent, don't guess about whether it matters.

Understand it before the government asks about it.

Before you file, understand the record you're adding to.

Many clients ask the same thing after hiring an immigration lawyer: What happens now?

First, the legal team learns your history and goals. Then comes the document request, application drafting, review meetings, signatures, submission, and updates while the government processes the case.

You remain involved throughout. You explain your background, gather records, review personal information, and confirm that the application reflects your life accurately.

Read the blog for a walkthrough of each stage so you and your family can approach the process with a better sense of what comes next.

Filing your own immigration application? Before you submit it, check these three things.

1. Eligibility. Make sure you understand not simply which form you're filing, but why you qualify for the immigration benefit you're requesting.

2. Consistency. Compare the information you're providing now with previous immigration applications, visa applications and other government filings.

3. Your history. Previous immigration issues, travel, overstays, arrests, prior marriages, petitions or denials may matter even when they don't seem connected to the application you're preparing today.

Completing the form correctly is only part of preparing an immigration case correctly.

If something in your history makes you stop and wonder, “Does this matter?” that's a good reason to find out before you submit.

Received an immigration penalty notice connected to a removal order? Don't assume the amount on the notice is the end of the conversation.

We are seeing increased attention around civil penalties involving individuals with final removal orders. Depending on the circumstances, those penalties can become substantial.

The important thing is what you do next.

Do not ignore the notice. Preserve the documents you received. Pay close attention to any response deadline. And before assuming that the amount is final or that nothing can be done, have an immigration attorney review the notice and your underlying immigration history.

The facts matter, and available options depend on the individual case.

Cambridge Immigration Law is reviewing these matters and helping individuals understand what the government is alleging and what options may be available.

If you or a family member received one of these notices, contact our team promptly.

Before you file an immigration application, compare it to what you have filed before.

One of the easiest things to overlook when preparing your own immigration filing is consistency.

Addresses, employment history, dates, travel, prior relationships, previous applications and answers given to the government may already exist in your immigration record. A new filing doesn't exist in isolation.

A difference doesn't automatically mean there is a problem. But if something in your new application conflicts with an earlier filing, you should understand why before submitting it.

That is one reason our campaign focuses on the questions applicants should ask before they hit submit, not simply how to complete a form.

If you are preparing an immigration application yourself and something in your history gives you pause, that may be the right time to get legal advice.

Know what to check. Know what questions to ask. Know when to get help.

A USCIS rejection can come from something as simple as a missing signature, an outdated form, or payment information that doesn't meet current requirements.

That can feel especially frustrating after you have spent weeks gathering transcripts, identity records, employment documents, translations, and financial evidence.

Before submission, each part of the application should match the rest.

Filing your own immigration application? Have an attorney review your situation before you submit.

Many people begin an immigration application believing the process is simply a matter of completing the correct forms. But the questions that matter most often come before the paperwork.

Are you eligible for the benefit you’re requesting? Have you disclosed information consistently with previous applications? Do you understand which supporting documents are required? Could something in your immigration history affect your case?

An application can be carefully completed and still raise legal questions that deserve attention.

At Cambridge Immigration Law, we help individuals and families understand their immigration circumstances, identify potential complications, and make informed decisions about how to proceed.

If you’re preparing to file on your own, consider getting professional guidance before submitting your application.

Before you file, know what you’re filing.
