Harvard South Asian Law Students Association - SALSA

Harvard South Asian Law Students Association - SALSA The Harvard South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA) is open to all HLS students curious about South Asian law, culture, community, or cuisine!

SALSA provides a forum for those in the Harvard Law School community interested in South Asian American and South Asian legal issues. We aim to seed dialogue in the legal, cultural, and political contexts through lectures, panels, film screenings, and social events and to connect students to legal professionals and firms interested in diversity outreach. Thank you to our generous 2019-2020 sponsor

Dear all,
SALSA has come together to issue a statement regarding the violence in Delhi (and other areas) in relation to the CAA. We fully support minority equality and minority rights, including the right to peaceful protest-a right that many have been deprived of in Kashmir. We stand against all forms of intolerance, Islamophobia, and discrimination. While our words will never be able to alleviate the pain of those affected, we stand with our communities and wish peace and healing upon all.

In solidarity,

SALSA Board

Thank you to everyone who came together to write this statement.

Custodial & Dining Staff Appreciation Week!

This year, to herald their annual Thanksgiving Dinner, Student Government is hosting a week-long celebration of our custodial and dining staff from November 18-22. We are a co-sponsor of the celebration. This is an opportunity to get to know staff members, share your appreciation of our community’s custodial and dining staff, and learn more about the people of HLS.

This celebration will honor the members of our community who work so hard to make our lives here better. We seek to cultivate a culture of kindness and empathy, not just for other students, but also for everyone who is a part of the HLS community. Throughout the week, look out for opportunities around campus to write thank you notes for our custodial and dining staff, and be sure to say an extra-warm thank you to all staff members you meet!

The Harvard South Asian Law Student Association (SALSA) is an organization dedicated to the advancement and visibility of the South Asian community and other marginalized groups in the legal field and beyond. Today, we are writing to stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri community in South Asia and across the diaspora.

In the past two weeks, an additional 35,000 Indian soldiers were deployed in Kashmir, a region distinguished as the world's most densely militarized zone. Following the evacuation of all tourists, the Government of India has suspended the Kashmiri people’s right to assemble, halted all mobile networks, and arrested Kashmiri political leaders. Using justifications of “integration” and “security,” the Government abolished Kashmir’s status as a state and divided the territory into two regions, without Kashmiri input nor opportunity for dissent.

As the situation in Kashmir continues to unfold, we would like to affirm the Kashmiri identity and the role of religious and ethnic diversity across South Asia. We firmly believe that all minorities have a right to live and exist peacefully across South Asia and beyond.

As activists and advocates, we will continue to challenge when governments propagate justifications of security both in and out of South Asia. No matter the context, we will continue to ask security from what and for whom. In doing so, we hope to combat the marginalization and increased surveillance of minority communities around the world.

As forthcoming lawyers, we respect democratic institutions and the procedures that safeguard legal and political change. Thus, it pains us to see the region’s identity abolished without the consent or input of its own people. Ultimately, the Government’s purported motives of integration represent an attack on state sovereignty and threaten Indian federalism. We hope that the true principles of secular democracy will ring true in the region.

We wish peace upon all of you and all those affected. Our doors are always open to you for dialogue and healing. We, as a community, will continue to watch, listen to, and advocate for those around us.

Reposting Rajiv Narayan's post about this important meeting:

Tonight at 5:30 pm in the WCC: Join other student groups to learn more and show solidarity with Harvard BLSA as they organize around the clock to respond to Harvard and the Cambridge Police.

Last night, 4 police officers reacted to a mental health crisis by severely beating of a Black Harvard student. Current and admitted students were witness to the event. This is on the heels of Mental Health Week, and within the widely-reported context of police beating and even killing Black folks all around the country. Show up to demand that the administration and police do better.
