Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits apply in Massachusetts if you were in a motor vehicle accident. (motorcyclists are excluded from this coverage). The vehicle's insurance you were in usually supplies the PIP coverage. PIP also applies and follows the vehicle's insurance that struck you if you were a pedestrian or bicyclist.

The first $2,000.00 in medical bills are usually paid under PIP and then depending on if you have a public or ERISA self funded health plan you may be entitled to up to $8,000 in medical benefits.

If you have private health insurance, PIP can pay the first $2,000.00 medical bills or a combination of co-pays, deductibles or lost wages at 75% up a total of $8,000.00 in PIP benefits. After PIP is exhausted or health care should begin paying any excess bills.
