“Of the 1.1 million people ages 20 and over who left the workforce between August and September, over 800,000 were women, according to an analysis by the National Women’s Law Center...for comparison, 216,000 men left the job market in the same time period… even as parts of the economy stirred back to life...women are actually beginning to opt out...One of the key factors in their decision? The persistent gender wage gap...”

In some families buckling under the caregiving burden, the lower wage earner is leaving the work force. Usually that’s the wife.

“We [the U.S.] need to make sure if we’re going to have a strong recovery -- a strong, equitable recovery -- we need to get women back into the workforce.” Read more on this issue below:

Millions of women have left the workforce during the pandemic as schools stopped in-person learning. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh says the recovery hinges on women returning to work.

“Working mothers are either willingly leaving jobs or are being forced out in extraordinary numbers… The pandemic has had a devastating effect on employment overall but especially on mothers’ paid labor.”

New data show that there were 1.4 million more mothers not actively working for pay in January compared to pre-pandemic levels.

“Increased household responsibilities have forced many working mothers -- and especially Black and Latinx mothers -- to scale back on their hours or leave the workforce entirely during the pandemic, further widening economic and racial disparities.”

Claire Cain Miller says many working moms have scaled back on their hours or left the workforce entirely in response to new household burdens. "There were never the structures in place to help us."

“As the school year began, 865,000 women dropped out of the labor force, compared with 216,000 men. In October, men gained back all their modest September losses, while only about half of women returned.”

More than 2 million women had dropped out of the labor force entirely as of October. Many are moms of elementary-school-aged children.

Data from the “Women in the Workplace” report has shown that women are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This data showed that 1 in 4 women are considering leaving the workforce or changing their careers due to the pandemic. “Even before the pandemic...mothers were already working a double shift...now with the coronavirus, what you have is a double double shift…”

New report from Lean In and McKinsey & Company shows that women are being disproportionately impacted by Covid-19 and many are thinking about leaving the workforce.

“Before the pandemic, women made up more than 90 percent of the child care sector with more than 1.1 million workers overall...When COVID-19 tanked the U.S. economy, a third of those care workers lost their jobs...Many child care providers had few resources to draw upon when their hours or jobs were cut or their facilities closed...”

When the pandemic forced day cares and schools to close across much of the country, the stress of child care fell upon millions of parents of children who feel they must choose between their jobs and kids, often multiple times a day.

A VICTORY long-in-the-making for workers at the state capitol last night!
SB 1383 (Jackson) passed and, with the governor's signature, will expand *job-protected* (that workers pay into) for employees at companies with 5+ employees; it also expands "family" to include more definitions of just WHO is family!

We applaud Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson for fighting for this bill! And co-authors Asm. Lorena Gonzalez and Asm. Ash Kahlra, thank you so much!
The allies for which we are eternally grateful: Equal Rights Advocates, Legal Aid at Work, ACLU of California's Center for Advocacy and Policy, the California Work & Family Coalition, and the California Labor Federation - we couldn't do it without you!
