When it comes to divorce, taking the fight into a courtroom often does more harm than good.

Steven Shumer highlights that an out-of-court negotiated settlement vastly reduces the emotional trauma and conflict for everyone involved. Most importantly, it keeps the decision-making power right where it belongs: with you. You know your children and your family's needs far better than any judge ever could.

Our family law team is dedicated to helping clients achieve peaceful, practical resolutions. Contact BFSNG Law Group today to schedule a free, confidential consultation.

If you’re buying a home with an FHA loan, there’s one strict rule that catches buyers and sellers by surprise: Minimum Property Standards.

Peter Goodman points out that when an FHA appraiser flags issues like peeling paint, a missing handrail, or roof damage, those repairs must be completed before the loan will fund. Unlike conventional deals, you can’t just take a cash credit at closing and fix it later.

The smart move? Ask your home inspector to point out potential FHA red flags before you go into contract so you can negotiate who completes the repairs upfront. Contact BFSNG Law Group to ensure your FHA transaction goes smoothly from contract to closing.

If you and your spouse want to avoid the hostile nature of traditional court battles, divorce mediation might be the right path forward.

As our partner Steven Shumer notes, working with a neutral mediator who is also an experienced matrimonial attorney gives you the advantage of real court familiarity without stepping into a courtroom. Mediation is a confidential, collaborative process that keeps decision-making in your hands, saving thousands in legal fees. Most importantly, it helps parents focus on the future rather than past grievances, paving the way for a healthier co-parenting relationship.

Contact BFSNG Law Group today to see if mediation is right for your family.

Asking a family member or close friend to co-sign a loan might seem harmless, but it can lead to serious legal complications down the road.

As our bankruptcy partner Heath Berger explains, if you file for personal bankruptcy, your primary responsibility for that debt gets wiped out. However, your co-signer remains 100% legally responsible for the remaining balance. Before asking someone to co-sign—or agreeing to co-sign for a loved one—it’s crucial to understand the long-term financial risks involved.

If you are dealing with co-signed loans and considering debt relief, contact our team to discuss your options.

A seller’s concession can be a great tool—it lets a buyer roll closing costs into their mortgage instead of paying cash upfront. But as our partner Peter Goodman explains, it carries serious risks if it isn't structured correctly.

For buyers, the higher purchase price must still appraise. If the property appraises low, you could be stuck covering the gap in cash or risk losing the deal entirely. For sellers, a low appraisal might force you to lower your price or watch the deal fall through.

Concessions can work wonders, but only when they’re negotiated with care before you sign. Reach out to our real estate team to make sure your contract is built to protect you.

Choosing a divorce attorney isn't about finding the loudest litigator—it’s about finding a strategic partner whose philosophy matches your goals.

As our partner Steven Shumer highlights, an aggressive lawyer who fights over minor details will quickly run up your legal fees without adding real value. Our family law team focuses on problem-solving and cost-effective resolutions first. Most importantly, we will always tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.

When you're ready for honest, realistic guidance through your divorce, give our team a call.

When you’ve spent a lifetime building a nest egg together, a divorce later in life can feel like a major threat to your future stability.

As Steven Shumer emphasizes, splitting retirement accounts and pensions requires a careful, long-term strategy. A mistake made during a gray divorce can directly impact your quality of life during retirement.

If you are facing a marital transition later in life, don't leave your financial future to chance. Our team brings decades of experience to ensure your hard-earned assets are divided fairly and securely.

Trying to hide assets from creditors right before filing for bankruptcy almost always backfires.

As Heath Berger emphasizes, transparency is your best defense in court. Many people don't realize that the legal system already includes specific built-in exemptions designed to let you keep your car, your home equity, and your personal belongings safely throughout the process.

Before you make any sudden changes to your titles or deeds, talk to our team. We'll make sure your assets are protected legally and strategically from day one.

When a marriage involves significant assets, multiple properties, or closely-held businesses, the divorce process becomes incredibly complex.

As Steven Shumer emphasizes, protecting your financial future depends entirely on an accurate picture of the marital estate. If one side is actively hiding or distorting financial records, you need a strategic, evidence-based legal team in your corner to trace those funds.

We bring decades of matrimonial litigation experience to ensure your hard-earned property is accounted for and divided fairly. Reach out to the BFSNG team today for a confidential, strategic consultation.

Most people assume that once you owe the IRS, you are stuck with that debt forever. But our bankruptcy team wants you to know about a lesser-known rule in the legal system.

Under the right circumstances, older income tax debt can be completely discharged in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As Heath Berger explains, if your debt is for income taxes, is at least three years old, the returns were filed on time, and there is no active tax lien on your property, you might be able to wipe that burden out entirely.

Before you commit to a lifetime of IRS payments, let our firm review your dates and see if you qualify for a clean slate.
