On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, declaring that "all slaves are free" and establishing "an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves."
Today we honor both the historical breakthrough and the ongoing mission of “Equal Justice Under Law.” This promise carved above our Supreme Court still calls us forward—to make justice not just a distant ideal, but a lived reality for all.
