📬 Tax Tip Series: What to Do When You Receive an IRS Notice
Don’t panic. Receiving a notice from the IRS can be stressful, but it’s more common than you think—and it doesn’t always mean something’s wrong.
Here’s what to do if you receive an IRS notice in the mail:
✅ Read the notice carefully
The IRS will explain what the notice is about—whether it’s a balance due, a change to your return, a request for information, or something else. The notice number (usually in the top or bottom right corner) is key.
✅ Check for accuracy
Compare the information on the notice with your tax records. Sometimes the issue can be as simple as a missing document or a misreported number.
✅ Respond by the deadline
If the notice requires a response, act promptly. Ignoring it can lead to additional penalties or enforcement action.
✅ Don’t call the IRS immediately
Unless the notice instructs you to call, you don’t need to wait on hold for hours. Often, the matter can be handled by mail or with the help of a tax professional.
✅ Contact a tax professional
